The “Girl, So Confusing” remix turns Charli XCX’s account of uncertainty about a friendship into a two-sided exchange: Lorde answers in her own verse. Charli said the collaboration was unplanned, began after she sent Lorde a voice note, and took three days to make.
What is the “Girl, So Confusing” remix about?
“Girl, So Confusing” first appeared on Charli XCX’s album Brat. The remix, featuring Lorde, was reported released on June 21, 2024, by Pitchfork.
In the original song, Charli describes perceived similarities between herself and another person, uncertainty about that person’s intentions, and a fear that the other person wants to see her fail. Lorde’s verse adds the other side: she recounts receiving Charli’s voice note, not knowing how to respond, feeling caught in her thoughts, and struggling with her body and comparison. The remix therefore changes the song from one person’s uneasy account into a direct exchange, without erasing the uncertainty that prompted it.
How did Charli and Lorde make the remix?
In a July 17, 2024 Billboard interview republished by Radio 88.8, Charli said she had told Lorde the song was about her before Brat came out, and that Lorde was okay with that. The day before the album’s release, Charli sent Lorde a voice note. Lorde replied by suggesting she join a version of the song.

Charli said she had not asked Lorde to contribute: the remix was not planned and took three days to make. Lorde described the verse as a conversation they had not previously had in that form: “When I was writing this verse, I was saying these things to her for the first time.” She also said, “I love that we truly did work it out on the remix.” Both quotations are from the Billboard interview.
What changes between the original and the remix?
| Version | Point of view | What it contributes |
|---|---|---|
| Original “Girl, So Confusing” | Charli’s account | Perceived likeness, uncertainty about the other person’s intentions, and insecurity about being seen to fail. |
| “Girl, So Confusing” remix featuring Lorde | Charli’s account plus Lorde’s reply | Lorde describes her response to the voice note and brings in her own feelings about comparison and her body. |
Charli said in the same Billboard interview, “I wanted this record to feel like I was having a conversation with the listener in a true way.” That aim is reflected in the remix’s form: Lorde does not merely echo Charli’s concerns; she offers a distinct perspective.

What can be said about the friendship—and what should not be assumed?
Coverage of the original song prompted speculation that it was about Lorde. The artists’ reported accounts establish something more specific: Charli told Lorde the song was about her, and they discussed it directly before the album’s release. The remix records their exchange, but it is not evidence for claims about a long-running feud or details of either artist’s private life beyond what they said themselves.
These reports establish the release context and the artists’ accounts of how the collaboration began; they are not a complete songwriting, production, or rights-holder credit sheet. No additional ownership or credit claims should be inferred from them.

The Lorde collaboration is also associated with the expanded remix album Brat and It’s Completely Different but Also Still Brat. The cited reporting describes a vinyl gatefold, but an edition’s exact track listing should be checked before buying: the available account does not establish that every physical edition contains the remix. In particular, do not assume the original Brat vinyl includes Lorde’s version.
