The season’s “dark secret” is really two separate revelations: a record makes Daniel suspect Miyagi’s opponent died in an old Sekai Taikai, while clues point to Miyagi’s assault and theft of a necklace. The finale gives the necklace story a personal motive: it belonged to Miyagi’s late wife and had been stolen from her. That makes the alleged robbery easier to understand, but it does not resolve the tournament death.
What clues make Daniel question Mr. Miyagi’s past?
Early in season 6, Daniel finds a box of Miyagi’s belongings and follows a trail that complicates the version of his mentor he thought he knew. The clues include a 1947 newspaper account of a police search for robbery suspect Keisuke Miyagi, a passport under that name, and a lead to a former boxing gym. A man connected to the gym tells Daniel that Miyagi left the country after stealing a valuable necklace. TVLine’s season 6 report and interview recounts the early investigation.

At this point, Daniel has evidence that raises questions, not a complete explanation of what happened. The name, police report, passport and gym account form the necklace-related thread.
What does the Sekai Taikai record say?
In part 2, Terry Silver gives Daniel a record from an earlier Sekai Taikai. Daniel sees a result indicating that Miyagi’s opponent died, and concludes that Miyagi killed him. The record is a separate revelation from the necklace clues; the season presents it as a shock to Daniel, not as part of the alleged necklace robbery. Slashfilm’s part 2 account describes Daniel’s reaction to the record.

- This season, with Cobra Kai eliminated from the Valley, our senseis and students must decide if and how they will compete in the Sekai Taikai — the world championships of karate.
What happened to Miyagi’s necklace?
The finale reveals that the necklace belonged to Miyagi’s late wife, Yukio, and had been taken from her belongings by an internment-camp guard after her death. Miyagi went after it. That history gives the assault and flight a personal motive: the alleged theft looks less like opportunistic crime and more like an attempt to recover a family keepsake. TIME’s finale recap reports the explanation.
This context changes how Daniel can interpret the necklace incident. It does not, on its own, establish that every allegation was false or explain the circumstances of the Sekai Taikai opponent’s death.

Why does the reveal make sense emotionally?
The resolution is not that Daniel discovers Miyagi was perfect after all. It is that he has to make room for a fuller, more complicated person than the idealized mentor he remembered. The necklace’s history helps Daniel understand why Miyagi might have acted as he did, while the tournament record remains a distinct and troubling piece of his past. In a post-finale creator interview with Gizmodo/io9, the creators connect the necklace story to Daniel learning that there were parts of Miyagi’s life he never knew.
How to keep the two revelations straight
| Story thread | Evidence Daniel encounters | What later context establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Necklace incident | A 1947 police account, a Keisuke Miyagi passport and a gym-connected man’s account, as reported by TVLine. | The finale says the necklace was taken from Miyagi’s late wife by a guard, giving his pursuit of it a personal motive, as recapped by TIME. |
| Sekai Taikai death | A tournament record indicates Miyagi’s opponent died; Daniel interprets the result as Miyagi having killed him, according to Slashfilm. | The cited finale coverage does not connect the necklace explanation to the tournament result. |
