The footage aired in April 2024, months after Punk had left the promotion. Before the broadcast, AEW president Tony Khan said the clip was relevant to current storylines.
What CM Punk said about AEW airing the footage
In an interview with Jimmy Traina for SI Media, transcribed by WrestleTalk on August 1, 2024, Punk described his reaction to the broadcast:
“It felt really ugly, but then I was just like… showing that footage isn’t gonna help them or hurt me, so I was just like, ‘whatever’.”
He also joked, “Being the top draw in two different companies is pretty wild. Thanks guys.” Those remarks were Punk’s response to AEW airing the clip; they do not establish how viewers or the promotion were affected.

Why AEW said it aired the clip
Before the broadcast, AEW president Tony Khan told ComicBook.com on April 10, 2024 that the footage would be relevant to storylines. He said, “It will be relevant and I’ll leave it to the Young Bucks to explain the relevance to the story and AEW Dynasty.” Khan linked the segment to the Young Bucks’ angle and the approaching AEW Dynasty event. That was AEW’s stated storyline rationale.
What Punk had said before the broadcast
On April 1, 2024, Punk gave his account of the confrontation in an interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. Fightful’s transcript presents the incident and surrounding conversations as Punk described them. His account is one participant’s version, not a neutral finding about every disputed detail.

The clip was from the backstage altercation involving Punk and Perry at AEW All In in London in August 2023. AEW aired it on Dynamite in April 2024, after Punk’s interview with Helwani. A court-filing excerpt, filed on November 15, 2024 and mirrored by Podnews, reports that AEW fired Punk with cause on September 2, 2023. The firing therefore preceded the footage’s broadcast; the 2024 airing did not cause his 2023 departure.
