No evidence in the available reporting confirms that Billie Eilish inspired a new album by Lana Del Rey or Marina. The documented influence largely runs the other way: Eilish has praised both artists’ use of vocal character, and she and her brother Finneas looked to Del Rey’s Born to Die while shaping the cohesive, start-to-finish feel of Eilish’s 2024 album Hit Me Hard and Soft.

Did Billie Eilish inspire Lana Del Rey and Marina’s new album?

That wording reverses the relationship established by the available sources. They do not verify a new Lana Del Rey or Marina album inspired by Eilish. Instead, Eilish has spoken about admiring Marina and Del Rey’s creative approaches, while reporting on Eilish’s own albums documents specific points of influence.

The clearest evidence concerns craft, not a claim that the three artists sound alike: Eilish has praised the way Marina and Del Rey use changing voices and character, and Del Rey’s Born to Die was among the albums that informed the sequencing ambitions for Hit Me Hard and Soft.

What Eilish admired about Marina and Del Rey

In a 2021 Los Angeles Times interview about Happier Than Ever, Eilish discussed artists who take creative risks with their voices and sing in character. She said, “Marina and Lana Del Rey do that, and I’ve always loved that about them.” Her remark was about vocal persona and experimentation—not an assertion that she was copying either artist.

HIT ME HARD AND SOFT
  • Billie Eilish's third studio album, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT, released via Darkroom/Interscope Records is her most daring body of work to date, a diverse yet cohesive collection of songs - ideally listened to in its entirety from beginning to end - does exactly as the album title suggests; hits you hard and soft both lyrically and sonically, while bending genres and defying trends along the way

In the same article, Finneas described his aim for the album this way: “I wanted this to be Billie’s album about Billie.” That helps distinguish admiration for other artists from the album’s center of gravity: Eilish and Finneas were making a record focused on Eilish, even as her writing drew on influences.

How Born to Die informed Eilish’s 2024 album

For Hit Me Hard and Soft, released in 2024, Eilish and Finneas wanted a cohesive record that worked best from beginning to end. Rolling Stone Canada reported that albums they grew up loving helped shape that goal, including Del Rey’s 2012 major-label debut, Born to Die. This is a reported influence on album cohesion and full-album listening—not evidence that Eilish adopted Del Rey’s sound.

Eilish also told Rolling Stone Canada that one of her favorite music videos is Del Rey’s “Blue Jeans” and that she wanted to pay homage to it in a video. That is a separate, specific expression of appreciation for Del Rey’s visual work.

The official Billie Eilish store lists Hit Me Hard and Soft on vinyl and CD, with the album’s track listing. The listing establishes those formats on the official store; it does not establish stock or pricing at other retailers.

What the 2023 conversation with Del Rey does—and does not—show

In a 2023 Interview conversation, Eilish spoke with Del Rey about Del Rey’s album Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, its personal themes, and songwriting. They discussed storytelling and writing from character perspectives. The conversation offers context for shared creative interests, but it is not evidence that Eilish inspired Del Rey’s record.

Three distinct creative connections

Creative question What the sources establish
Voice and character In 2021, Eilish praised Marina and Del Rey for experimenting with voice and singing in character.
Album cohesion Reporting in 2024 connects Del Rey’s Born to Die, among other formative albums, to Eilish and Finneas’s goal of making Hit Me Hard and Soft work as a start-to-finish listen.
Personal writing and storytelling Eilish and Del Rey discussed storytelling, character perspectives, and personal material in their 2023 conversation; it does not establish an influence on Del Rey’s album from Eilish.

A 2024 NME search-result report says Marina found Eilish’s admiration “flattering” and named Eilish and Del Rey among artists who inspired her. That offers secondary corroboration of an influence running toward Marina, but does not establish the claim implied by “Billie Eilish inspired Lana Del Rey and Marina’s new album.”
