News reports connected the difference to a contentious interpretation of the pinching pose in South Korea, but none of the reviewed reports cited Apple confirming that this was why the image changed.
What was different in Apple’s iPhone Air images?
Korea JoongAng Daily and News1 reported on September 11, 2025, that promotional imagery for Apple’s iPhone 17 Air differed by market: images on several country sites showed the phone held between two fingers, while the Korean image showed the phone alone. The reports described the contrast as Korea-specific.

This was a difference in advertising imagery, not a missing iPhone feature or a change to pinch-to-zoom.
Why is the pinching gesture controversial in South Korea?
Korea JoongAng Daily reported that the pose, sometimes called “crab hand,” has been adopted by groups and interpreted by critics as a mocking symbol tied to gender politics and male anatomy. That is a contested reading in a specific cultural and political context—not an inherent meaning of an ordinary hand gesture. A person using the pose cannot be assumed to intend that interpretation.

PiunikaWeb described online jokes and discussion after the image difference was noticed, but that coverage does not establish how widespread or representative the response was. There is no named statistic in the reviewed reports measuring the scale of the controversy or public reaction.
Did Apple explain why it changed the image?
The reports interpreted the Korea-specific image as an effort to avoid controversy. However, neither report cited an Apple statement confirming that motive. The image difference is reported; the explanation for Apple’s decision remains an attributed interpretation, not a confirmed account of the company’s intent.

What else was reported about the iPhone Air?
Korea JoongAng Daily reported that Apple unveiled the iPhone 17 Air at its September 2025 launch event and listed its thickness as 5.6 millimeters and its weight as 165 grams. The publication also reported that Apple CEO Tim Cook called the device “a game changer.” Those product details and remarks do not explain the Korean advertisement’s image.
