The “359 free movies to watch on YouTube” list is a historical catalog, not a reliable count of what is free today. Nick Gray’s Phandroid article, published March 27, 2020, described 359 films available without payment at that time. YouTube’s current Free Primetime Movies & Shows catalog changes regularly, and availability can vary by location. Use the old list for ideas, then check YouTube’s live catalog before choosing a film.
What the 359-movie list represents
Nick Gray’s Phandroid article from March 27, 2020 presented 359 movies as free to watch on YouTube when it was published. Its count and listings describe that moment; they do not establish how many free movies YouTube has now or whether any particular title remains free.

The dated list can still work as a source of film ideas. Treat each title as a search suggestion, not a promise of current access. A film may no longer appear in the free catalog, may be offered only as a rental or purchase, or may not be available in your location.
Where to find free movies on YouTube now
YouTube’s official youtube.com/movies catalog is the better place to confirm current listings. YouTube Help also points viewers to a “free movies for you” shelf on the YouTube homepage. YouTube says the Free Primetime Movies & Shows catalog updates regularly, so a listing can change after you find it.

- Factory sealed DVD
- Open youtube.com/movies or look for the “free movies for you” shelf on YouTube’s homepage.
- Browse the available films, or search YouTube for a title from the 2020 list.
- Open the film’s listing and check that it is currently offered free to watch in your location, rather than only as a rental or purchase.
- Confirm the listing before settling in to watch; catalogs and title availability can change.
YouTube’s guidance for movies also notes that individual-title availability varies by location and may change over time. A title appearing in an old list—or in search results—does not by itself confirm that it is free where you are.
How the old list compares with the live catalog
| What you need | Phandroid’s 2020 list | YouTube’s current catalog |
|---|---|---|
| Freshness | A dated reference published March 27, 2020. | YouTube says the catalog updates regularly. |
| Local availability | The list does not verify present-day availability by location. | Current listings reflect what YouTube makes available to browse, though individual title availability varies by location. |
| Best use | Finding titles to search for. | Checking what is offered now and whether a film is free in your location. |
Where the free-movie program is available
YouTube Help lists Free Primetime Movies & Shows in the United States, Australia, Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom. That list describes the program’s stated eligible locations; it does not mean every film is available in every one of those countries. Check the title’s live listing from your location.

Are YouTube’s free movies ad-supported?
The Free Primetime Movies & Shows program is ad-supported. YouTube Help says Premium and Premium Lite subscribers can watch movies and shows in this program without ads. This applies to films in the program; it should not be taken as a claim about every movie video elsewhere on YouTube.

You do not need special hardware to watch. YouTube documents movie playback on computers, mobile devices, smart TVs, streaming devices, and game consoles. Its TV app platform guidance includes Roku. A streaming device is only an optional way to get YouTube on a television when you do not already have a compatible built-in app or another supported device.
