There is no definitive league table of the greatest lyricists. The 15 writers here come from a personal 2014 selection whose author explicitly said the order was not strict and the list was not exhaustive. It ranges from hip-hop and metal to folk, indie and rock—so “lyricist” means anyone shaping words for songs, not only solo singer-songwriters.

Instead of treating “brilliant” as a score, this guide looks at craft: vivid images, narrative voice, rhyme and rhythmic fit, emotional directness or ambiguity, social observation, and originality across a body of work. The examples are starting points for listening, not proof of a universal ranking.

What makes a great lyricist?

Lyrics live on the page, but they are made to be heard. Bob Dylan described a great song as “the sum of all things,” adding that it “follows the logic of the heart and stays in your head long after you’ve heard it” in an interview on his official site. That is his personal reflection, not a formal test, but it points to why song lyrics resist simple scoring: sound, feeling, memory and performance all matter.

For a useful comparison, listen for what the words are doing. Does the writer make a scene feel present? Build a convincing speaker or story? Make rhyme and rhythm carry meaning? Leave room for uncertainty, or say something plainly that still resonates? Rap’s internal rhyme and rhythmic patterning, for example, should not be measured by the same mechanics as a folk ballad’s narrative pacing. They are different solutions to the shared challenge of making language work as music.

15 lyricists, and what to listen for

Peter Dolving

The 2014 selection opens with Peter Dolving, associated with Swedish metal band The Haunted. His inclusion reflects the list’s broad idea of lyric writing: the work of a band frontperson belongs in the conversation alongside that of a poet-guitarist or rapper. Start with The Haunted’s “The Drowning,” cited by the list, and listen for how a vocal delivery and a song’s intensity shape the words’ impact. The original selection offers a personal judgment rather than a documented critical consensus.

Hawksley Workman

Canadian singer-songwriter Hawksley Workman appears next. The selection singles out “Anger as Beauty” as a point of entry. Rather than assume that every listener will hear the same meaning, notice how the title’s pairing of a forceful emotion with an aesthetic idea frames the experience of the song. The value of a lyric can be as much in the tension it creates as in a clearly stated story.

PJ Harvey

PJ Harvey’s work can be approached through its ability to create a distinct speaker and atmosphere. The 2014 list points to “The Words That Maketh Murder.” Listen to how the title itself brings language into contact with violence, then consider how the vocal performance and arrangement affect the way you interpret the words. That is a better route into the writing than treating a song as a page detached from its sound.

Black Francis / Frank Black

Black Francis, also known for solo work as Frank Black, is included for writing that can feel oblique, strange or deliberately unresolved. The selection recommends “Where Is My Mind?” by Pixies. Its question gives the listener an immediate verbal hook, while the song’s overall effect depends on more than a literal answer. It is a reminder that memorable writing need not explain everything it evokes.

The Notorious B.I.G.

The Notorious B.I.G. brings rap storytelling and verbal control into the group. The original list highlights “Juicy.” Listen for how a first-person account can turn personal perspective into a shaped narrative, and how rhythm and rhyme make the story memorable as performance. Rap’s craft is not simply rhyme at speed: the voice, pacing and arrangement of details all contribute to how a listener follows the account.

Neil Young

Neil Young’s songwriting offers a contrasting route: spare, direct language can leave space for a listener to supply feeling and context. The 2014 list cites “After the Gold Rush.” Hear how the song’s images and changes in perspective create an impression rather than a neatly explained plot. Its place here also helps show why lyric brilliance cannot be reduced to verbal density.

Tupac Shakur

Tupac Shakur’s writing is often approached through its urgency and social observation. The list names “Brenda’s Got a Baby,” a narrative example that invites attention to character, circumstance and the consequences that accumulate across a story. Listen to how the song’s point of view directs sympathy and how its subject matter is carried by the form of a song rather than presented as detached commentary.

Eminem

Eminem’s entry represents technical verbal dexterity: rhyme, internal patterning and rhythmic fit are central things to notice. The source list points to “Stan,” where a dramatic speaker and an unfolding exchange give the writing a narrative structure as well as a dense sound. Listen for how the voice changes the effect of the words, rather than treating rhyme complexity as an end in itself.

Nas

Nas is represented by Illmatic, which the original list describes as a landmark album and whose lyrics have been widely studied. Begin with “N.Y. State of Mind” and attend to how detail, perspective and tightly arranged language create a vivid sense of place. The album is a particularly useful comparison point with the story-driven work of Biggie and Tupac: each foregrounds narrative voice, but the listening experience depends on the individual song’s rhythms and choices of detail.

Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen’s songs often draw listeners into a character’s circumstances. The selection points to “The River,” a good place to consider how a lyric can imply a life beyond the events it explicitly describes. Track who is speaking, what has changed, and what is left unsaid. The emotional force of narrative songwriting often comes from the gap between a speaker’s words and what a listener understands about the situation.

Leonard Cohen

Leonard Cohen’s writing moves between song, poetry, intimacy and ambiguity. The list highlights “Hallelujah” and themes of love, loss and religion; those themes are broad, and the song should not be reduced to one definitive interpretation. In a 1992 interview, Cohen explained that he moved between notebook and keyboard and that “the line of music is very influential in determining the length of a line or the density, the syllabic density” (The Paris Review). That account makes clear that the lyric is shaped in relation to melody, not merely fitted to it afterward. For a more oblique narrative, “Famous Blue Raincoat” has been interpreted by critics in different ways; The Atlantic offers one reading, not a settled meaning: The Atlantic on “Famous Blue Raincoat”.

John Mellencamp

John Mellencamp’s place in the selection broadens the field toward plainspoken rock songwriting and social observation. The list names “Pink Houses.” Listen for the relationship between an individual voice and the larger picture suggested by the song. A lyric can make a social point through a speaker’s perspective and a few concrete images rather than spelling out a complete argument.

Nick Cave

Nick Cave is included as a writer whose songs can build dark, dramatic worlds. The 2014 selection points to “The Mercy Seat.” Listen for how repetition and a concentrated point of view can make a song feel like a sustained monologue. The tension between what a speaker claims and what the listener infers is one way songwriting can create drama without resolving every question.

John Lennon

John Lennon’s entry points toward a different kind of economy: a phrase or image can carry weight through melody, repetition and shared cultural familiarity. The source list cites “Imagine.” As you listen, consider how its direct address and repeated central idea make it easy to remember, while the song’s meaning depends on the listener’s own response to the proposition it presents.

Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan closes the original list, though its author cautioned that the sequence was not a strict ranking. The selection highlights “Desolation Row” and Dylan’s imaginative writing. His reflections on songwriting also provide a useful lens: in addition to emotional effect and memorability, he values a song that can be taken up by different performers and styles. In a 1991 Rolling Stone interview, Joni Mitchell described the impact of Dylan’s “Positively Fourth Street” on her sense of what songwriting could do: “now you could make your songs literature” (Rolling Stone). That is Mitchell’s response to a particular song, not a universal verdict, but it captures one strand of Dylan’s influence.

How to compare the styles without forcing a winner

Try listening across the list by craft rather than by rank. Compare a narrative song such as “Stan” with “The River”: both invite attention to a speaker and a sequence of events, but their pacing, sound and kinds of detail are different. Then compare the rhyme and rhythmic patterning in Nas or Eminem with the more spacious, image-led writing of Neil Young or Cohen. Ask what each approach makes possible, rather than using one genre’s strengths as the standard for another.

Joni Mitchell, whose songwriting is not part of the original 15, offers a useful perspective on how images and viewpoint can be constructed. She said, “My style of songwriting is influenced by cinema,” and described aiming to make pictures in listeners’ minds in a 2005 New York interview (New York magazine). She also explained that “Woodstock” was written from the imagined perspective of someone who wanted to attend but could not (JoniMitchell.com). Those examples show why a lyric’s speaker should not automatically be treated as the writer speaking autobiographically.

A listening path through the list

  1. Choose one song from the list and listen once without reading along. Notice the feeling and images that stay with you.

  2. Listen again for the speaker: who is talking, to whom, and what does the song leave unexplained?

  3. Choose a song from a different genre and compare one shared craft question, such as how each creates a memorable voice or makes language fit its rhythm.

  4. Return to the sound of the performance. Notice what melody, phrasing and delivery add that a printed lyric alone would not.

The result is more useful than a final ranking: a sense of the many ways writers make words work as songs.
