There is no reliable, documented ranking of 20 expensive things Oprah Winfrey personally bought for friends and family. The clearest high-value example in the available reporting is a house reportedly valued at $490,000 that she bought for her half-sister, Patricia Lofton. Other accounts describe meaningful gifts and support, but do not establish prices. Some of the largest figures often associated with Oprah’s generosity refer instead to audience giveaways paid for by sponsors, not personal gifts.
What are the most expensive gifts Oprah has given?
The available accounts do not provide comparable prices for 20 private gifts, so arranging 20 items from most to least expensive would create a false ranking. The examples below distinguish reported personal gifts from audience promotions and other forms of giving. Where a price is absent—or is only a secondary source’s estimate—it is identified as such.
A house for Patricia Lofton
Nicki Swift reported in 2024 that Winfrey bought her half-sister Patricia Lofton a home valued at $490,000. The same account says Winfrey provided a monthly stipend while Lofton returned to college to pursue social work; it does not give the stipend amount. The article quotes a Winfrey spokeswoman describing the support as help toward Lofton’s dream of becoming a social worker. The home’s value is a figure reported by Nicki Swift, not an independently verified property valuation in the cited coverage.
A custom bookcase and children’s books for Mindy Kaling’s daughter
In a February 2018 account by TIME, Mindy Kaling described Winfrey sending a hand-carved bookcase for Kaling’s daughter, Katherine. It held 100 classic children’s books and was personalized as “Katherine’s Book Club.” Kaling recalled being told, “Two men are going to be coming to your house, they said, with a U-Haul truck. All you want in life is to hear that two men in a U-Haul truck are coming to your house because Oprah sent them.” TIME reports the contents and craftsmanship, but not the bookcase’s price.

Support for Gayle King
Nicki Swift reported that Winfrey paid for a live-in nanny for her friend Gayle King after King’s second child was born. That account does not establish Winfrey’s total expenditure. It also mentions a heart-shaped diamond pendant that King considered special, but gives no price for the jewelry. Neither item can be placed in a dollar ranking on the information reported.
Celebrations and a cruise for Maya Angelou
Nicki Swift describes lavish birthday celebrations for poet Maya Angelou, including an 80th-birthday event at Mar-a-Lago, and a Caribbean cruise for 150 people. The article says the celebration’s cost is unclear; its suggested lower-bound figure is speculative, not a documented bill. The cruise is another substantial gesture, but the account does not establish a total cost that would allow a fair comparison.

Why the famous car giveaway does not belong in a friends-and-family ranking
In 2004, Winfrey’s show gave Pontiac G-6 sedans to audience members. HISTORY, in an article published in 2010 and updated in 2025, reports that Pontiac donated 276 cars valued at $28,500 each. That makes the giveaway a major television promotion, not evidence that Winfrey personally bought cars for friends or relatives. HISTORY also reports that most recipients faced about $6,000 in federal and state income taxes, so the cars were not cost-free for winners.
Other widely remembered giveaways belong in the same separate category. ABC News’ 2010 report on a “Favorite Things” episode describes audience prizes including a new VW Beetle, diamonds, an iPad, and cookware. These were gifts to studio audience members, not private purchases for Winfrey’s friends and family.

Other generosity that should not be mistaken for private gifts
Nicki Swift also reports trips and gifts involving Winfrey’s employees, including cash and iPads for magazine staff. Those examples concern her work community, not exclusively friends and family; reported trip totals rely on per-person estimates and counts attributed to secondary sources. The same article discusses assistance with homebuilding after Hurricane Katrina and a school in South Africa. Those are charitable efforts, not personal gifts to a friend or relative.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the reporting can—and cannot—show
- Best-supported high-value personal example: Nicki Swift’s 2024 report gives a $490,000 value for Lofton’s home, but that figure remains secondary reporting.
- Well-described gift with no price: TIME’s 2018 account gives specific details about Kaling’s custom bookcase and its 100 books, but no cost.
- Not a personal purchase: HISTORY attributes the Pontiac cars to the automaker’s donation for an audience promotion.
- No verified top 20: The accounts mix private gifts, ongoing support, audience prizes, staff benefits, and charity, with too few established prices to rank 20 personal purchases.
Readers looking to recreate the spirit of Kaling’s gift could put together a collection of classic children’s books. That would be an inspired reader-made gift, not a claim that a particular retail set matches Winfrey’s custom bookcase or its contents.
