Films, animation, games, music and fandom can make environmental issues part of the stories and conversations people already care about. These 15 picks and examples range from climate documentaries to campaigns built around familiar characters and fan-led advocacy. They can prompt curiosity or offer a way into a discussion; their presence in pop culture is not proof that audiences changed their behavior.

Films that put environmental questions on screen

1. An Inconvenient Truth

Al Gore’s documentary is among the environmentally themed works named by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) in its account of partnerships with Participant. It is a direct entry point for viewers interested in climate change and documentary storytelling. NRDC’s listing establishes the film’s place in that partnership account, not a measurable effect on policy or individual behavior. NRDC’s entertainment partnerships

2. An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power

This follow-up is also listed by NRDC among works connected with its Participant partnerships. It offers another documentary perspective on climate issues for viewers who want to continue with a film-centered exploration. The source does not attribute a specific policy result to the film. NRDC’s entertainment partnerships

3. Last Call at the Oasis

NRDC includes this film in the same account of environmentally themed partnership works. Its title signals a focus on water, making it a fit for viewers looking beyond climate to environmental pressures on essential resources. NRDC’s entertainment partnerships

4. Dark Waters

NRDC also names Dark Waters, a dramatic film connected to environmental issues, in its partnership account. A narrative feature can bring environmental concerns into the language of character and conflict rather than a documentary’s explanatory form. The listing itself does not establish an outcome caused by the film. NRDC’s entertainment partnerships

5. Syriana

NRDC’s list includes Syriana among its environmentally themed partnership works. It broadens the film section beyond documentaries, showing how environmental subjects can sit within wider stories about energy and society. NRDC’s entertainment partnerships

Animation and familiar characters as a way in

6. Turtle Journey

Greenpeace Aotearoa reports that Aardman Animations worked with Greenpeace UK on this short about a turtle family trying to reach home. Its hazards include climate change, plastic pollution, oil drilling and destructive fishing. The organization lists Helen Mirren, Olivia Colman, Bella Ramsey and David Harbour among the performers. It is a story-led way to approach ocean threats, especially for viewers drawn to animation and family narratives. Greenpeace Aotearoa on Turtle Journey

7. Angry Birds in the UN ActNow campaign

The United Nations’ ActNow campaign history describes collaborations with Angry Birds. The example shows a familiar game property being used to bring an existing audience into a sustainability campaign. It does not establish that the franchise as a whole is environmental entertainment or quantify what audiences did afterward. UN ActNow campaign history

8. Peter Rabbit in the UN ActNow campaign

ActNow’s history also names Peter Rabbit among its entertainment collaborations. Recognizable characters can help make a campaign approachable, particularly for families, while the environmental message belongs to the campaign rather than being evidence of a franchise-wide theme. UN ActNow campaign history

9. Trolls in the UN ActNow campaign

The UN campaign account includes Trolls as another collaboration. Together, these character partnerships illustrate how an environmental initiative can borrow the reach and familiarity of popular entertainment without turning the work itself into proof of lasting impact. UN ActNow campaign history

10. Baobab Studios and interactive storytelling

ActNow’s campaign history also records a collaboration with Baobab Studios. That connection extends the list beyond conventional screen stories toward immersive creative formats. The UN account verifies the collaboration, but does not specify audience outcomes for it. UN ActNow campaign history

Games and the culture around playing

11. The AWorld app for ActNow

The UN says a gamified mobile app by AWorld continues to engage audiences through ActNow. Unlike a film watched from start to finish, an app can structure participation around activities; however, the campaign description does not provide evidence that use changes behavior or reduces emissions. 12. Games taking up climate, biodiversity and pollution

The UN Environment Programme describes the Playing for the Planet Alliance as helping game developers integrate messages and missions about climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. Games’ immersive, communal qualities can make these subjects part of play and conversation. The UNEP source supports the alliance and its approach, but does not verify a particular game title for this entry. UNEP on video games and the planet

Music and fandom that turn attention into advocacy

13. Musicians using their platforms for environmental issues

UNEP describes musicians using public visibility to spotlight climate change, pollution and species loss. The same article quotes a musician identified as Johnson saying that communities around artists and events can use their collective voice on issues including climate action, plastic waste and food security. This is an argument for the potential of music communities, not a measured result for every artist or audience. UNEP on musicians and environmental advocacy

14. K-pop fans at COP30

At COP30 in Belém, Brazil, K-pop fans brought environmental activism into a major climate gathering. An Associated Press report published November 20, 2025 described costumed protests against fossil-fuel funding that referenced KPop Demon Hunters. Cheulhong Kim, director of the Korean Cultural Center in Brazil, called it the first time K-pop fans had been introduced on a COP stage as fans rather than bands or artists. The report offers a specific example of fandom-led advocacy, not a claim about all K-pop fans. Associated Press report on K-pop fans at COP30

15. Climate Action Superheroes for younger audiences

The UN’s Climate Action Superheroes resource gives children an age-oriented way to encounter climate action and environmental learning. It is a useful family-facing companion to stories and campaigns aimed at broader audiences; the UN resource does not establish an educational impact measure. UN Climate Action Superheroes

Stories matter, and so does how they are made

Environmental pop culture has two distinct dimensions: what a work says, and the footprint of creating and distributing it. The UNFCCC’s ECCA Film & Television Alliance supports sharing climate tools and knowledge, reducing environmental impacts in content development, production and distribution, and supporting storytelling professionals seeking to inspire climate awareness and action. Simon Stiell, UN Climate Change Executive Secretary, has described arts and culture as important both for reducing emissions and for imagining a low-carbon, just and climate-resilient future. UNFCCC’s Entertainment and Culture for Climate Action

That distinction helps keep expectations grounded: cultural works can make an issue visible, give people a shared reference point, or connect them with a campaign. Whether that visibility leads to lasting action is a separate question, and these examples do not establish a general causal effect.
