Chandler Kinney and Brandon Armstrong posted the highest score of the Dancing With the Stars season 33 premiere: 23 out of 30 for their tango to Chappell Roan’s “HOT TO GO!” The episode aired Sept. 17, 2024, and introduced 13 celebrity contestants. The phrase “set the standard” was attributed to judge Carrie Ann Inaba in a Yahoo-hosted recap excerpt; the wording is reported, not independently confirmed here as a verbatim quote.
Who led the season 33 premiere?
Kinney and Armstrong topped the scores reported in TVLine’s Sept. 17 recap, with 23/30. TVLine also described Kinney as an early frontrunner. That is the outlet’s assessment of one night’s performances, not a prediction of the season’s outcome.
Dwight Howard and Daniella Karagach followed with 22/30 for a salsa, while Joey Graziadei and Jenna Johnson and Stephen Nedoroscik and Rylee Arnold each earned 21/30. Nedoroscik and Arnold performed a jive to Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now,” bringing a high-energy contrast to Kinney’s tango.

What does “set the standard” refer to?
The phrase refers to Kinney’s premiere performance. A Yahoo-hosted excerpt of an Entertainment Tonight recap attributes “set the standard for season 33” to judge Carrie Ann Inaba. Because the page could not be accessed to verify the wording against the original recap or a recording, it is best treated as a reported phrase rather than a confirmed direct quotation.
