Beth and Rip head toward a new life near Dillon, and the old Dutton ranch operation comes to an end.
What is the final Yellowstone episode called?
The finale is “Life Is A Promise,” Season 5, Episode 14. “The Long Goodbye” is the headline of Matt Cabral’s Yahoo Entertainment recap, published December 16, 2024—not the episode’s official title. Paramount+’s episode listing and the Apple TV and Prime Video listings identify it as “Life Is A Promise.” Paramount+ Canada’s episode listing provides the official title and a brief synopsis.
Episode dates differ across platform listings: Apple TV shows December 15, 2024, and an 86-minute runtime; Prime Video shows December 14, 2024. Those are listing dates, not a reason to assign one universal date to the episode. Apple TV’s listing and Prime Video’s Season 5 listing show the platform-specific information.
How does the finale resolve the Yellowstone ranch?
Kayce summons Chief Thomas Rainwater and Mo and offers the ranch land for $1.25 per acre, according to Cabral’s recap. The agreement has two conditions: Kayce keeps East Camp, where he, Monica, and Tate live, and Rainwater promises not to sell or develop the land. Kayce and Rainwater seal the understanding with a blood ritual.

The episode makes the transfer visible after John’s funeral. Broken Rock residents move onto the former Dutton property and begin changing it, including removing the “Y” from the barn. The ending is not the preservation of the Yellowstone as the Dutton family ran it; control of the main ranch has passed to Broken Rock. Kayce’s family retains a smaller home base at East Camp, and Kayce and Tate are shown bidding on heifers, indicating that Kayce’s cattle future continues separately.
What happens to John, Beth, and Rip?
John’s funeral gives the episode its emotional center. When he is ready to be buried, Rip offers to dig the grave. Beth wants it near her mother’s, tying John’s burial to the family history that has shaped the ranch and its conflicts.

Beth has bought a remote property near Dillon, Montana, where she imagines a small house and a large barn for herself and Rip. After the funeral, Beth and Kayce walk the property, while Rip and Lloyd take down the Yellowstone entry sign. Kayce declines to keep it because he plans to create a separate cattle brand.
Rip invites Lloyd to join him and Beth near Dillon. Lloyd turns him down, but Rip leaves the invitation open. The other ranch hands also choose their next steps: Teeter goes to Texas to work with Travis at Bosque Ranch, while Ryan takes time away.

What happens to Jamie?
Jamie is preparing for a press conference when Beth confronts him. In Cabral’s account of the episode, Beth kills Jamie, then stages the scene to look like a disappearance; Rip helps her remove the body. The finale closes that family conflict through violence rather than reconciliation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does the ending mean for the Dutton family?
The finale separates the family’s futures instead of carrying the old ranch forward under a new Dutton arrangement. The main land returns to Broken Rock under Kayce’s terms; Monica, Kayce, and Tate keep East Camp; Beth and Rip plan a distinct ranch life near Dillon. The last scenes, with Broken Rock residents occupying the old property and removing its Yellowstone mark, make the change in ownership and identity concrete.
