Saturday Night Live turned reports of a private clash between Marco Rubio and Elon Musk into a comic Oval Office mediation. In the March 8, 2025 cold open, James Austin Johnson played Donald Trump, Marcello Hernández played Rubio, and Mike Myers played Musk. The sketch’s insults and supposed settlement are fictional dialogue, not a record of what the real figures said.
What the SNL cold open depicts
The official SNL video, titled “Trump, Musk and Rubio Meeting Cold Open,” was published March 8, 2025. Its description sets up an Oval Office meeting in which Trump tries to keep the peace between Rubio and Musk. The performers are James Austin Johnson as Trump, Marcello Hernández as Rubio, and Mike Myers as Musk.
Mediaite’s Joe DePaolo described the segment as a six-minute cold open. Its comic premise casts Trump as a mediator whose effort to settle the dispute is undermined by jokes about Rubio’s eagerness to please and Musk’s influence. Musk arrives as “tech support” and repeatedly answers “Polo!” when Trump says he is speaking to Marco. Those are details of the sketch as reported by Mediaite, not claims about an actual meeting.
How the sketch’s “settlement” falls apart
In Mediaite’s account, Trump tells Musk, “Elon, stay in your lane. You’re not the boss.” Musk replies, “But I paid you $300 million,” and Trump reverses course: “And that’s why you’re the boss.” The $300 million is a punchline in the fictional scene; the cited coverage does not establish that it was a real payment.

The joke’s turn is the point of the mock mediation: Trump briefly asserts authority, then abandons that position when Musk invokes money. The sketch also makes Rubio part of the joke by portraying him as an overeager suck-up. These characterizations describe SNL’s satire, not independently verified conduct by the real people.
The reported clash behind the satire
The cold open followed contemporaneous reports of a heated, closed-door Trump administration meeting involving Musk and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Mediaite described the underlying event as a reported closed-door blowout. A March 9, 2025 CNN transcript said the sketch played off a New York Times report about an intense cabinet meeting and characterized the exchange as reportedly heated.

The meeting was private. The cited coverage does not provide a primary transcript or a complete, independently verified account of what happened in the room. SNL’s dialogue—including the insults, attempted settlement, and payment joke—should therefore be read as invented comedy inspired by reporting, not as a documentary account of the dispute.
