The series starts at the beginning of the East Blue Saga, as the original TV anime did, but its announced first season plans to cover roughly 50 manga chapters in seven episodes totaling around 300 minutes. That format makes adaptation choices central to the project: the images hint at a visual approach, while the finished episodes will show how the story’s pace and expressive style fare in motion.
What is Netflix’s THE ONE PIECE anime?
THE ONE PIECE is a new anime adaptation of Oda’s manga, beginning with chapter one and the East Blue Saga. It is distinct from both the long-running Toei Animation TV anime and Netflix’s live-action ONE PIECE series. Netflix currently plans to premiere it in February 2027. Netflix Tudum and the Netflix Media Center describe the upcoming series and its scope.
Netflix’s August 2026 series guide says the first season covers the first 50 chapters; the Media Center describes the span as approximately 50 chapters. The planned endpoint is Luffy’s encounter with Sanji at the Baratie. This is the announced scope, not a chapter-by-chapter account of what will appear on screen.
The original anime has been a screen version of the story since 1999, a date Netflix cited in its December 2023 announcement. The new production therefore revisits familiar material rather than introducing the East Blue story to animation for the first time.

What do the first-look materials actually show?
Netflix’s guide points to a teaser previewing Luffy’s journey, concept art for Shanks, a newer image, and stills of Luffy at sea and in Windmill Village. The material provides a limited view of character design and setting. It is promotional material, not footage from a completed season or a review of finished episodes.
The images and the source story make the adaptation’s visual task easy to see in broad terms: the East Blue is an introduction to the Straw Hats, and Luffy’s defining power is his ability to stretch his limbs like rubber. The manga also relies on expressive adventure imagery. But still images cannot establish how the new show handles movement, comic timing, emotional shifts, or the transitions between episodes. The material does not prove either fidelity or a successful new interpretation.
Netflix’s original announcement attributed this ambition to a joint statement from the production committee: “With THE ONE PIECE, the committee aims to provide viewers with a fresh yet familiar experience, utilizing cutting-edge visual technology to reimagine Luffy’s adventures through the beloved East Blue saga.” That is the committee’s stated goal, not independent evidence of what the finished series achieves.
How do the manga, existing anime, and new series differ?
| Version | Source and scope | Format and status | What can be compared now |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oda’s manga | The original story; the new series starts at chapter one. | Published manga; Netflix reported more than 600 million copies sold globally as of March 2026. | Readers can compare the source’s story and visual language with either screen adaptation. |
| Toei Animation TV anime | An existing adaptation of the manga, broadcast since 1999, according to Netflix’s December 2023 announcement. | Long-running TV anime; the cited announcement describes it as distinct from the new project. | It is an earlier animated version of the same story, not the new Netflix series. |
| Netflix’s THE ONE PIECE | New adaptation beginning in the East Blue Saga; first season planned to cover roughly 50 chapters through Luffy’s encounter with Sanji at the Baratie. | Seven episodes, released together, with a total runtime of around 300 minutes; planned for February 2027 on Netflix. | Promotional images are available, but episode pacing and the completed visual interpretation cannot yet be assessed. |
The season’s announced format gives a concrete point of comparison: around 50 chapters are planned for seven episodes and approximately 300 minutes. That is roughly five hours of screen time, but the figures do not reveal how much will be devoted to each event or how the show will handle transitions and emphasis. Any verdict about whether it rushes, expands, or reshapes the material would be premature before the episodes are available.

Who is making the new adaptation?
WIT Studio is producing the animation. Netflix lists Masashi Koizuka as director, Taku Kishimoto as series composer, and Kyoji Asano and Takatoshi Honda as character designers and chief animation directors in its series guide and Media Center listing.
Netflix’s 2023 announcement names Shueisha, Fuji Television Network, and Toei Animation as collaborators in the production committee. WIT Studio’s role as animation producer and Toei’s named committee role are separate pieces of production context; neither, by itself, establishes how the finished adaptation will look or feel.

The first look supports a narrow set of observations about the project: it returns to the manga’s opening, has an announced East Blue endpoint, and has released a small selection of promotional visuals. Netflix’s Tudum guide reports that the manga had sold more than 600 million copies globally as of March 2026, underscoring the scale of the source readership without predicting how readers will respond to this adaptation.
- Can be assessed now: the announced chapter span, episode count, total runtime, release plan, production credits, and the subjects visible in the released images.
- Cannot be established from the first look: the finished animation’s quality, how closely episodes follow individual manga scenes, the actual pace of the season, or audience response.
- Useful comparison: consult the manga as the source work, then compare its opening with the completed Netflix season and the existing TV anime.
Netflix’s current plan is a February 2027 release, but schedules can change before premiere. The official format and release information appears in the Media Center listing.
