Mrs. Jumbo — Dumbo
In Disney’s animated story, Dumbo’s mother offers a simple, powerful image of maternal love: she comforts and protects her son even after she has been separated from him. Her limited screen time makes that bond all the more affecting.

Bambi’s mother — Bambi
Bambi’s mother guides him through the forest and teaches him how to live in it. Her sudden loss shifts the film from a gentle coming-of-age story toward the vulnerability and danger of the natural world.
-
Mrs. Robinson — The Graduate
Played by Anne Bancroft, Mrs. Robinson is a sharp, unsettling presence in Mike Nichols’s comedy-drama. Her affair with recent college graduate Benjamin Braddock complicates the familiar image of a mother as a background figure defined only by care for her children.

-
Joan Crawford as portrayed in Mommie Dearest
Faye Dunaway’s Joan Crawford is a frightening portrait of a famous, controlling mother. The film makes the gap between public image and private family life central to its drama; its version of Crawford is a movie portrayal, not a neutral account of the real person.
-
Mama Rose — Gypsy
Rose’s determination to make her daughters vaudeville stars gives Gypsy its momentum and its tension. She is loving, ambitious and overbearing at once, a show-business mother whose drive can both support and suffocate her children.
-
Sarah Connor — The Terminator films
Sarah Connor’s motherhood is bound up with a future she is fighting to protect. Across the science-fiction action series, her transformation from an ordinary young woman into a determined defender makes maternal care feel urgent, physical and inseparable from survival.
-
Ellen Ripley — Aliens
Ripley becomes a protector to Newt in James Cameron’s science-fiction thriller, drawing on the tenderness and resolve of a surrogate mother. Their bond gives the confrontation with the alien threat an emotional center beyond survival alone.

-
Marge Gunderson — Fargo
Frances McDormand’s pregnant police chief brings calm decency and dry humor to the Coen brothers’ crime film. Marge is not defined by motherhood, but her pregnancy is part of the character’s grounded, quietly reassuring presence amid the story’s violence and absurdity.
-
Helen Parr, also known as Elastigirl — The Incredibles
Helen balances raising three children with the demands of superhero life. Her flexibility is literal as well as emotional: she adapts to danger, family conflict and changing expectations without being reduced to a supporting role.
-
Elinor — Brave
Queen Elinor and her daughter Merida clash over duty, independence and tradition. Their conflict drives the animated fantasy, and the film gives both mother and daughter room to change rather than treating their disagreement as a simple contest between a strict parent and a rebellious child.
-
Molly Weasley — Harry Potter films
Molly’s home is a refuge for Harry and a lively gathering place for her large family. Her warmth and fierce courage make her a memorable maternal presence in a fantasy series where family is often defined by loyalty and care, not only by birth.

Leigh Anne Tuohy — The Blind Side
As presented in the film, Leigh Anne opens her home to Michael Oher and becomes a forceful advocate for him. The story places her in the role of an adoptive mother, though its account of Oher and the Tuohys is a dramatization rather than a documentary record.
-
Joy Newsome — Room
Brie Larson plays Joy, a mother raising her young son Jack under the extraordinary constraints of captivity. The film’s intimate perspective makes her resourcefulness and efforts to protect his emotional world as important as the physical struggle to escape.
-
Evelyn Wang — Everything Everywhere All at Once
Evelyn’s relationship with her daughter Joy sits at the heart of the film’s multiverse-spanning adventure. Its wild comedy and science-fiction spectacle return to a recognizable family problem: how a mother and daughter can love one another while struggling to understand each other.
-
Kate McCallister — Home Alone
When Kate realizes her son Kevin has been left behind, her frantic attempt to get home turns a holiday comedy into a mother’s determined race against distance and bad luck. Her panic is funny, but the commitment beneath it is unmistakable.

-
Melanie Horowitz — Clueless
Cher’s mother Melanie is absent from the story, but Cher’s easy confidence and privileged home life help establish the world of the comedy. She is a reminder that a screen mother can shape a film’s family atmosphere without being a major plot driver.
-
Maria von Trapp — The Sound of Music
Maria enters the von Trapp household as a governess, not a mother, and gradually builds a bond with the children in her care. Her warmth and musical playfulness help transform a strict household into a family united by affection.
-
Marmee March — Little Women
Marmee’s guidance anchors the March sisters through growing up, hardship and diverging ambitions. She is a steady parent, but her influence is not simply about keeping the household together: she encourages each daughter to develop a distinct sense of self.
-
Suyuan Woo — The Joy Luck Club
Suyuan’s story in the film’s interwoven family drama speaks to the distance that can grow between mothers and daughters across generations. Her hopes for her child are shaped by her own life, making love and misunderstanding part of the same inheritance.

Why movie moms are not one archetype
These characters show how broad the category can be. Some are biological mothers, while others take on adoptive, surrogate or caregiving roles; the list also includes an animal mother and a future mother. Their stories range from family comedy to horror, musical theater, animation and science fiction. The common thread is not perfection but consequence: each woman’s care, conflict or absence changes how the story unfolds.
That variety is also visible in existing screen-mother roundups. AARP published an editorial selection of 15 best and worst movie mothers in 2021, while TheWrap described its 2023 collection of iconic movie mothers as a snapshot rather than an exhaustive verdict. Common Sense Media organizes examples across different kinds of family relationships and characters. Those lists are useful starting points, not a single agreed-upon ranking.
Further reading on screen mothers
For a wider survey, Simon & Schuster’s Mom in the Movies: The Iconic Screen Mothers You Love (and a Few You Love to Hate), by TCM and Richard Corliss, discusses more than a hundred screen mothers across multiple categories. Corliss also explored the changing treatment of mothers in Disney and Pixar animation, including Mrs. Jumbo, Helen Parr and Elinor, in TIME.
