Director Brandon Vietti has said the production reshuffled events, trimmed material and added some scenes to make the story work as a film. The best way to describe it is a deliberately faithful adaptation shaped by the different demands of screen pacing and animation.
What the animated Watchmen adapts
Watchmen Chapter I begins DC’s two-part animated adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ graphic novel; Chapter II concludes it. The story is set in an alternate 1985. When a government-sponsored hero is murdered, outlawed former colleagues are drawn into an investigation that opens onto a larger mystery. DC’s description of the second chapter connects that mystery to the threat of nuclear war between the United States and Russia.
DC credits Brandon Vietti as director and J. Michael Straczynski as writer on both chapters. The starting point for comparison is the original Watchmen graphic novel, the source work by Moore and Gibbons.

Why the director calls it faithful
Vietti said the production goal was “to make the most faithful adaptation possible” while making the experience feel like reading a comic. That aim shaped both the storytelling and the visual approach: Vietti described using 3D animation to bring Gibbons’ designs and linework into a three-dimensional space.
That is an intention, not a claim that every panel or line was reproduced unchanged. The adaptation preserves the source’s recognizable world and central story while translating a carefully constructed comic into a different medium.

What changed in the move from page to screen
Events were reordered
The graphic novel unfolds across twelve issues, with each issue’s page count and pacing contributing to the larger structure. Vietti told DC that the order designed for those installments did not automatically make for effective film pacing. The animated films therefore reshuffle events rather than simply following the comic issue by issue.
Some material was trimmed
Vietti said the runtime could not accommodate everything across the twelve issues, so the team made cuts. That means the films are not a complete page-by-page transfer, even though fidelity was the stated goal.

Some scenes were added
In explaining how the filmmakers addressed the gaps created by adaptation, Vietti said that the changes sometimes led to a scene “that wasn’t in the original book.” He described those additions as solutions for movie pacing, intended to remain in the spirit of the source rather than reproduce its structure mechanically.

“Exactly the comic” is too literal a description. A more useful comparison separates three questions:

- Story: Does the two-part film retain the graphic novel’s central premise and major narrative elements? The official descriptions establish the murder investigation and the larger mystery as the story’s spine, but they do not provide a scene-by-scene inventory.
- Structure: Does the film follow the same sequence and pacing as the comic? No: Vietti has confirmed that events were reordered and material was cut or supplemented to fit the film format.
- Visual language: Does the animation preserve the source’s designs and comic-book feel? Vietti describes translating Gibbons’ design and linework into 3D animation, which is an interpretation in a new medium rather than a literal reproduction of printed panels.
For a close comparison, read or revisit the graphic novel alongside the films and pay attention to those separate dimensions. A change in sequence does not by itself mean the adaptation abandoned the source; visual resemblance alone does not mean every detail survived.
