For the U.S. Netflix release window of Aug. 17–24, 2026, two fiction picks stand out for very different moods: Talamasca: The Secret Order, a supernatural series arriving Aug. 23, and M3GAN, a technology-centered horror film listed for Aug. 24. This is an evidence-led pairing, not a claim about which titles an earlier version of this headline may have intended.
At a glance: two different kinds of suspense
| Title | Format and date | Premise | Best fit if you want… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Talamasca: The Secret Order | Season 1; Aug. 23, 2026 | A young lawyer with an unusual gift joins an ancient, secretive agency to investigate a supernatural mystery and his family’s dark past. | A continuing mystery built around a hidden organization. |
| M3GAN | Film; Aug. 24, 2026 | A roboticist tests a lifelike companion doll on her orphaned niece, but the android takes its childcare role to deadly extremes. | A contained horror/sci-fi premise about technology and family. |
Netflix’s Tudum guide lists both releases and describes their premises. The source does not establish runtime or episode count, so the practical difference is format: one is a film, the other a season-based series.

Why choose Talamasca: The Secret Order?
Pick this if you want a supernatural mystery with room to unfold across a series. The setup combines a gifted young lawyer, an old secret agency and a personal family history. That combination makes it the more natural option for viewers drawn to secret-society stories and ongoing plot threads.
The available listing gives the season’s premise and Aug. 23 date, but not an episode count or review-based measure of quality. Treat it as a premise-led watchlist choice rather than a promise about how the season plays out.

Why choose M3GAN?
Choose M3GAN for a sharper, high-concept horror/sci-fi setup: a companion android is entrusted with caring for a child, then interprets that responsibility in a dangerous way. Its focus on family and technology makes it a distinct alternative to the supernatural agency story.
Tudum lists the film for Aug. 24 and describes its premise; that listing does not establish reception, popularity or viewing quality. The recommendation here rests on the hook and genre, not on claims about audience response.

Prefer action or crime? Consider Facing El Chapo
If neither horror nor supernatural fiction is your mood, Netflix’s guide also lists Facing El Chapo for Aug. 21. It is described as a Mexican action movie about two officers who cross a cartel boss and have to survive the final hours of their shift; the listing characterizes it as a crime drama based on true events. It is a closer fit for viewers seeking action and crime than either of the two featured picks.
