Note: This list was framed for viewers preparing for the final season. Stranger Things 5 has since premiered: Netflix’s U.S. schedule listed Volume 1 for November 26, 2025, Volume 2 for December 25, and the finale for December 31. The picks below still work as a selective refresher or a focused series rewatch.
These ten episodes are selected for story setup and payoff, character importance, memorable set pieces, and how much useful context they refresh—not as a definitive or data-ranked “best of” list. Netflix’s October 2025 fan rewatch event chose one episode from each of the first four seasons; those four are included here alongside six episodes highlighted in Netflix’s later editorial look at “most-talked-about” installments.
1. Season 1, Chapter One: “The Vanishing of Will Byers”
Netflix opened its 2025 rewatch event with the episode that sets the story in motion. Will’s disappearance introduces Hawkins, the boys’ friendship, and the mystery that draws Eleven into their lives. It is the clearest starting point if you want to refresh the show’s original blend of small-town mystery and supernatural danger. Netflix Tudum’s rewatch-party recap identifies it as the event’s Season 1 selection.
2. Season 1, Chapter Three: “Holly, Jolly”
This early episode is a useful rewatch for the way it turns the search for Will into a more tangible mystery. Joyce’s determination to communicate with her son becomes central, while the children’s trust in Eleven deepens. Netflix’s “most-talked-about” episode feature includes it among the installments it singles out for emotional turns and discoveries.
#1 Best Overall
- In 1980s Indiana a group of friends witness supernatural forces and government exploits. In searching for answers, they unravel a series of mysteries.
3. Season 1, Chapter Eight: “The Upside Down”
The Season 1 finale pays off the first season’s rescue mission and establishes that defeating one immediate threat does not make Hawkins safe. Revisit it for the original group’s resolution, the cost of their victory, and the lingering clues that point beyond the first season. Netflix includes the episode in its editorial episode roundup.
4. Season 2, Chapter Four: “Will the Wise”
Netflix selected “Will the Wise” for its Season 2 slot in the 2025 rewatch event, calling attention to Will’s experience and the “He likes it cold” moment. It is a strong refresher for the season’s expanding mythology and for how the threat begins to affect Will and those closest to him. That event selection is an editorial choice, not a measured ranking of audience favorites. Netflix’s recap describes the selection.
Rank #2
- In 1980s Indiana a group of friends witness supernatural forces and government exploits. In searching for answers, they unravel a series of mysteries.
5. Season 2, Chapter Eight: “The Mind Flayer”
Netflix’s episode roundup also points to “The Mind Flayer,” a high-pressure installment built around the group trying to understand and contain the danger inside Will. It helps reconnect the personal stakes of Will’s story with the broader mythology—and shows how much the characters rely on one another when their explanations and plans are still uncertain. Netflix Tudum’s list provides its editorial context for the pick.
6. Season 2, Chapter Nine: “The Gate”
The Season 2 finale is a natural choice for revisiting the show’s pattern of temporary victories and unresolved danger. It brings the season’s immediate crisis to a close while keeping the central supernatural threat in view. Netflix includes it in its “most-talked-about” selection; that description is editorial framing, not the result of a published audience poll.

7. Season 3, Chapter Four: “The Sauna Test”
Netflix chose “The Sauna Test” for its Season 3 rewatch event. The episode links the group’s investigation into Billy’s possession with the Scoops Troop’s Russian mystery, giving it a useful cross-section of the season’s parallel storylines. It is an especially efficient refresher if you want to remember how the danger at Starcourt develops without revisiting every episode. Netflix Tudum’s event recap highlights those intersecting threads.
8. Season 3, Chapter Eight: “The Battle of Starcourt”
The Season 3 finale brings the Starcourt storylines together in a large-scale confrontation with emotional consequences for the group. Rewatch it for the season’s major turning point, the relationships under pressure, and the uncertainty left behind. Netflix’s episode roundup includes the finale among its discussion-oriented choices.

Netflix highlights it in its editorial list.

Netflix picked the Season 4 finale for its 2025 rewatch event, presenting it as an emotionally significant recap point before the final season. “The Piggyback” brings the season’s separate plans into a dangerous confrontation and leaves the heroes facing a changed Hawkins. Series co-creator Ross Duffer described the final season’s starting point this way: “I think what’s unique about this season is that it starts a little bit in chaos because our heroes ultimately lost at the end of Season 4.” Netflix’s rewatch recap identifies the episode selection; Netflix Tudum’s Season 5 cast feature attributes the quote to Duffer.
