Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer on the film Rust, was sentenced to 18 months in prison on April 15, 2024, after a jury convicted her of involuntary manslaughter. The jury acquitted her of evidence tampering. She was released on parole on May 23, 2025, according to the Associated Press; that report said her conviction appeal was pending at the time.
What was Gutierrez-Reed sentenced for?
The case followed a shooting on the New Mexico set of Rust on October 21, 2021. Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed and director Joel Souza was wounded, according to the Associated Press report on the shooting.
In March 2024, a jury found Gutierrez-Reed guilty of involuntary manslaughter and not guilty of evidence tampering. Those were separate verdicts: she was convicted of the manslaughter charge, but acquitted on the tampering charge. The Associated Press reported the verdict and sentence in its coverage of the case.
Prosecutors argued that live ammunition had been brought onto a set where it was prohibited and that basic firearm-safety procedures were not followed. That was the prosecution’s account; it should not be treated as a jury finding about every person’s responsibility for the production’s safety failures. The Associated Press summarized the prosecution’s position in its report on the case.

Why was the prison term 18 months?
On April 15, 2024, New Mexico Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer imposed an 18-month prison sentence, the maximum term reported for the conviction. At the sentencing hearing, Sommer told Gutierrez-Reed, “You were the armorer, the one that stood between a safe weapon and a weapon that could kill someone.” ABC News reproduced the remark in its sentencing report.
Was Hannah Gutierrez-Reed released from prison?
Yes. The Associated Press reported that Gutierrez-Reed was released on parole on May 23, 2025, after serving the sentence. The same AP report said her appeal of the conviction was pending then. It is a dated status report, not confirmation of the appeal’s outcome or her current custody or supervision status; the AP release report does not establish a later status.
