Anonymous Sex is an erotic short-story anthology in which 27 writers contribute 27 stories without individual bylines. The writers’ names appear together in an alphabetical list, leaving readers to guess who wrote what. Here, “anonymous” describes the story credits—not the people or encounters in the stories.
How the anthology’s anonymity works
Edited by Hillary Jordan and Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan, Anonymous Sex gives each story no author credit. The contributors are named alphabetically at the beginning, but their names are not matched to particular pieces. That structure makes identifying the writer part of the reading experience: readers can follow the stories, then weigh their guesses against what they know of the contributors’ work.
The conceit is a form of literary parlor game, but it also changes how readers approach the stories. Without a byline attached to each one, readers can encounter the writing before deciding which familiar authorial voice—or identity—they think they recognize.
What kinds of stories are inside?
The publisher describes a wide range of erotic subjects: obsession and love, domination and submission, revenge and unrequited sex, comedy, tortured desire, fairy-tale scenarios, and sex in the afterlife. The Los Angeles Times review points to further settings and premises, including long-distance seduction, skinny-dipping, a Brooklyn Book Festival bathroom, and cyber-seduction imagined in 2098. Those are examples rather than a complete inventory.

The publisher’s contributor list includes Louise Erdrich, Rebecca Makkai, Helen Oyeyemi, Chigozie Obioma, Téa Obreht, Mary-Louise Parker, Jason Reynolds, Luis Alberto Urrea, and Edmund White, among others. The Los Angeles Times characterizes the collection as literary erotic fiction and describes its stories as largely kinky and heterosexual; that is the reviewer’s assessment, not a substitute for reading the individual stories or a full description of every contributor’s work.
Why write erotic fiction without a byline?
In a Los Angeles Times feature, co-editor Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan said the editors wanted contributors to write beyond narrow expectations attached to identity. She described the project as an invitation: “At a time when the literary and artistic world is debating who has the right to write which story, it was interesting to tell our authors, ‘You can write anything you want,’” (Tan, quoted by Meredith Maran, Los Angeles Times).

Tan also reported that some contributors felt freer because their names were connected to the book but not to individual stories. Jordan told Maran that at least half the authors might not have joined the project without anonymity. Those comments explain the editors’ and contributors’ stated motivations; they do not establish that anonymity affects every writer or story in the same way.
Freedom, play, and the cost of concealment
Anonymity can be read as permission to experiment: a writer may try a voice or subject without asking readers to reconcile it with an established public persona. Some contributors described the arrangement as a craft challenge or a playful masquerade. Luis Alberto Urrea told Maran, “Every story in this book was written at the top of each writer’s game.”

There is another interpretation. Concealing individual bylines may protect writers from the stigma or reputational consequences sometimes attached to writing erotica. The Los Angeles Times feature raises that possibility alongside the editors’ account of expressive freedom. The two readings can coexist: a mask may give a writer room to play while also shielding them from judgment. The feature reported that contributors had agreed not to reveal their story assignments for a period after publication, underscoring that the anonymity was part of the project’s rules, not merely a puzzle for readers.
