Stranger Things: The First Shadow is a canonical stage prequel that deepens Henry Creel’s story and his transformation into Vecna. It is not a Netflix episode, and Netflix’s streamable Behind the Curtain: Stranger Things The First Shadow is a making-of documentary, not a recording of the play. As of October 8, 2026, the full production could be seen in person in London or New York; the official listings gave different end dates for each run.
What is The First Shadow?
Stranger Things: The First Shadow is a stage prequel set in Hawkins, Indiana, in 1959. Netflix describes it as an origin story rooted in the mythology of the television series. Its younger characters include Henry Creel, Joyce Byers, Jim Hopper, and Bob Newby. Netflix Tudum’s play guide identifies the production as part of the Stranger Things universe.
The play focuses on Henry’s troubled past. Netflix co-creator Ross Duffer said: “While Season 5 explores Henry’s backstory, the play provides a much deeper understanding of who he was — and how and why he became Vecna.” That is the clearest official description of what the play adds: more depth to Henry’s history and transformation, rather than a replacement for the series’ account. Netflix Tudum’s June 9, 2026 article gives the setting and Duffer’s comment.
Can you stream the full play?
Netflix streams Behind the Curtain: Stranger Things The First Shadow, a 2025 documentary about the production. Netflix describes it as following the cast and crew as they prepare for the London opening. It is behind-the-scenes coverage, not the complete stage performance. Netflix’s title page lists the documentary, while Netflix Tudum’s documentary feature describes its focus.

The London theatre site also listed tickets from £38.80 and linked to ticket-and-hotel packages when checked on October 8, 2026. Treat that starting price and package listing as time-sensitive, not guaranteed: confirm current prices, dates, and booking terms on the official site.
Do you need to see the play to understand the series?
No. The official Broadway education guide says audiences do not need to have watched the television series to enjoy the play. Netflix describes the play as deepening Henry’s backstory, and Duffer’s comment frames it as an added understanding of Vecna’s origins—not as required viewing for following the show. The guide describes a running time of around three hours. The Broadway education guide also notes loud noises, flashing lights, and strobe effects. Check the venue’s current guidance for exact runtime, age recommendations, access provisions, and content advisories.

Netflix reported on June 9, 2026, that the production had sold more than 1.6 million tickets across 1,500 performances in London and New York City. Those are figures Netflix gave on that date, not a live attendance counter. The same article reported Olivier Awards for Best Entertainment or Comedy Play and Best Set Design; Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards for Best Set Design and Most Promising Newcomer; and the WhatsOnStage Award for Best New Play.
