The shadowy figure in The Acolyte’s finale is Darth Plagueis. Creator Leslye Headland confirmed the identity, according to StarWars.com’s episode recap. The brief cave appearance is a reveal, not an explanation of Plagueis’s full plan.
When and where does Darth Plagueis appear?
Plagueis appears near the end of episode 8, the season finale, in a cave. As Osha and the Stranger depart, a shadowy figure with five claw-like fingers watches from the darkness. The recap describes this as the Plagueis reveal and reports Headland’s confirmation of who it is. The episode does not spell out why he is there or what he intends to do.

This is separate from the finale’s final scene, which features Yoda. The two appearances are distinct cameos, not one scene.
What the cameo means—and what it does not establish
The Acolyte is set in the High Republic era, about 100 years before The Phantom Menace, according to Lucasfilm’s series page. The timing connects the show to Plagueis’s earlier history, but the cave image alone does not establish a specific motive for watching Osha or the Stranger.
#1 Best Overall
The official Darth Plagueis Databank entry provides broader context: Plagueis is a Muun Sith Lord, was Darth Sidious’s mentor and Master, and was active against the Jedi during the High Republic. It also says Sidious killed him after Plagueis taught him what he knew. Those are franchise-reference details; the finale itself does not dramatize that history or explain how the cave scene leads to it.
“The legend of Darth Plagueis” is not the same as Star Wars Legends
The word “legend” can mean two different things here. In Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine tells Anakin the in-universe story of Darth Plagueis. StarWars.com presents that story on its “The Legend of Darth Plagueis” page. “Star Wars Legends,” by contrast, is a continuity label. The phrase “legend of Darth Plagueis” does not mean that this Acolyte cameo belongs to the Legends continuity.

Why the reveal stood out to the cast
Amandla Stenberg, who stars in The Acolyte, expressed enthusiasm about the character’s inclusion in a StarWars.com interview published July 23, 2024: “I think Plagueis is one of the coolest parts of canon, and I think one of the most intriguing parts.” That is Stenberg’s view, not a claim that every viewer or fan shares it.
