The finale makes Pennywise’s experience of time nonlinear: he knows Marge will become Richie Tozier’s mother and tries to kill her before Richie can be born. The mid-credits scene then jumps to 1988, where Ingrid Kersh encounters Beverly Marsh at Juniper Hill. Together, these moments connect the prequel to the films and give its backward-moving story a new possibility: Pennywise may try to change events that have already happened. The show makes that idea explicit for its own story, but it does not settle every question about time across Stephen King’s novel and the film adaptations.
What happens in the finale?
The immediate crisis begins when General Shaw’s forces remove and destroy one of the Shokopiwah people’s cage pillars. With the barrier weakened, It awakens and threatens to escape Derry. The children and adults work together to restore the cage’s function by planting a dagger made from the same cosmic material at the right location. The dagger resists being carried far from Neibolt House, where the comet associated with It came to Earth. The group succeeds, and Pennywise returns to dormancy for another 27 years. TVLine’s finale breakdown details the effort.
Why Pennywise targets Marge
During the climax, Pennywise isolates Marge and tells her she will grow up to have a son, Richie Tozier. Richie will help bring about Pennywise’s death, so the creature tries to kill Marge before Richie can be born. Dick Hallorann interrupts the attack while the rest of the group works to restore the cage. TV Guide’s interview with the finale’s producers discusses the film connections and the mid-credits sequence.
The reveal is more than a prediction about one character’s future. Pennywise speaks as if past origin and future defeat are present to him at once. That makes the show’s backward chronology consequential: a creature that does not experience time linearly might try to interfere with the events leading to its defeat. The finale establishes Pennywise’s attempt to prevent Richie’s role; it does not show that he succeeds in changing the future.

What does the mid-credits scene mean?
After the title card, the first scene shows Ingrid Kersh confined at Juniper Hill after her encounter with Pennywise. The next jumps forward to October 1988. An elderly Ingrid, played by Joan Gregson, hears a commotion after another patient’s suicide. The patient’s daughter is Beverly Marsh, played again by Sophia Lillis.
This is a direct handoff to the film-era story: it links the events of 1962 to a familiar character and setting. It is not a separate episode, nor does Beverly’s appearance rewrite her established role. The sequence connects the show’s past to the film timeline; it does not add a new explanation of Pennywise’s time powers. TV Guide identifies the scene’s continuity function.

How does the finale change Pennywise canon?
Andy Muschietti, the show’s creator and finale director, told TheWrap that Stephen King’s novel raises the question of how It experiences time but leaves it unresolved. “There’s something very mysterious in the book, there’s one moment of the Losers speculating about the way that It experiences time, but there’s not a single answer in the book.”
The series turns that ambiguity into an explicit premise for its own structure. Muschietti explained: “We made it bigger to the point where the whole reason why we’re telling the story backwards – because a monster that doesn’t experience time linearly can live in time in a very different way, and at the same time, can rewrite history, right?”

- Blu-ray movie
- What the finale depicts: Pennywise knows Marge’s future connection to Richie and tries to stop it.
- What the creators say the adaptation intends: Nonlinear time makes the backward chronology meaningful and opens the possibility that It could rewrite history.
- What remains unresolved: The finale does not establish that Pennywise has successfully changed events, or that this specific rule governs every version of the story.
TVLine also quotes Muschietti saying the novel leaves speculation about Pennywise’s experience of time uncertain rather than fixed. The series therefore expands a question in the book; it does not retroactively settle all of the novel’s, films’ or wider King universe’s continuity. The 27-year dormancy cycle remains part of the television story, but the nonlinear-time reveal adds a potential motive for threatening outcomes viewers may already know.

The creators described an intended three-part story set in 1962, 1935 and 1908, drawing on catastrophic events from the novel’s interludes, with dates adjusted for the adaptation. Muschietti told TVLine, “We wanted to make a three-season event story.” The “Chapter One” end card was added in post-production to surprise viewers in the way Muschietti remembered the end of the 2017 film doing.

That plan has since moved beyond an intention: HBO announced season two in August 2026, with the next season set in 1935. As of October 8, 2026, GamesRadar+ reported that no release date had been announced. The nonlinear-time premise gives this earlier setting a possible dramatic question: whether Pennywise can act on knowledge of the future. Whether it can actually alter known events remains open.
