What did Rosamund Pike say about the cancellation?
In an interview with Collider, as reported by GamesRadar+ on November 13, 2025, Pike said she thought the first season had not been good enough for some fans. She cited COVID shutdowns during production and changes among department heads as factors that made the early season difficult.

She described the show as finding its footing over time: “By season 2, we knew what we were doing, and we offered up a much better season.” Of Season 3, she said the cast and crew had their “wings fully spread,” and characterized it as a cohesive, deep show with strong writing and performances.
Pike wondered whether starting at that later level might have prevented cancellation, but presented that as an open question: “Maybe.” She also suggested that the series could have been caught up in what she called television’s “terrible churn factor”—the pressure to promote what is new. Neither point establishes Prime Video’s actual decision-making.

Was Season 1 part of the problem?
In Pike’s view, yes: she agreed that Season 1 fell short for some fans and connected its production challenges to the result. Her account joins two different issues—how the season was received and the disruptions behind the scenes—but does not prove that either caused the cancellation.
Her comments also emphasize the show’s improvement in Seasons 2 and 3. The counterfactual—that a stronger opening season might have kept the series alive—is speculation, not a confirmed explanation or guarantee that a different start would have changed Prime Video’s decision.

What business reasons were reported?
TheWrap reported on May 23, 2025 that the series was believed to have been too expensive to justify given its viewership performance. That is the outlet’s account of the business context, not an official Amazon explanation.
TheWrap also reported that the show launched strongly, becoming Prime Video’s most-watched series premiere of 2021. Its account of Season 3’s Nielsen performance was more mixed: the show left the top 10 originals chart after three weeks, then returned after the finale. These figures describe different points in the series’ run; they do not by themselves reveal how Amazon weighed the show’s costs, audience, or future prospects.

No definitive explanation came from Rafe Judkins in his public comments. In a statement reproduced by CinemaBlend on June 7, 2025, the showrunner said: “And the truth is, I don’t know.” He added that he wished he could give fans a clear explanation but could not.
That statement is an important distinction: Pike offered a production and industry interpretation, and TheWrap reported cost and viewership as context, but Judkins said he lacked the specific reason. No official Amazon cancellation rationale is established by these accounts.
Could another studio save The Wheel of Time?
Pike said she dreamed that another studio would pick up the series and believed the team could make a strong final sequence or season, now that they knew what to do with the books. In the same comments, however, she said viewers might have to accept that it was over. Her hope was not a revival announcement, and no new continuation was confirmed in the cited reporting.
