Paradise is a twisty, character-driven thriller that starts with a presidential murder investigation and quickly reveals a much bigger mystery. Sterling K. Brown gives it an emotional center, though the plotting can feel crowded and its cliffhangers sometimes more mechanical than meaningful.
What is Paradise about?
Sterling K. Brown plays Xavier Collins, a Secret Service agent investigating the murder of former president Cal Bradford (James Marsden). The question of who killed Bradford—and why—drives the opening, but the first episode sharply expands the story’s scope. Flashbacks gradually expose the characters’ histories and relationships as conspiracies complicate the investigation.

It is best to know that much going in. The pilot’s major reveal changes how the premise reads, and describing it would spoil one of the season’s most effective turns.
Why does Paradise feel Lost-like?
The comparison works mainly as shorthand for the show’s mystery-box momentum and character-focused flashbacks. Episodes fill in people’s pasts and their connections to the president and the town, allowing the present-day story to gather new meaning over time. It is not a claim that Paradise is an ensemble replica of Lost: not every character receives equal backstory depth.

The series also mixes personal drama with science fiction, political thriller, and murder mystery. That range gives it room to surprise, but it can also make the story feel overstuffed when its different strands compete for attention.
What works best in season one?
Sterling K. Brown’s guarded performance
Brown anchors the series as Xavier, a man whose reserve makes the emotional details revealed in flashbacks especially valuable. The backstory lets Brown show what the character keeps contained, giving the investigation a personal dimension beyond simply solving a crime.
The emotional story beneath the conspiracy
The mystery is only one part of the appeal. Family drama and complicated relationships give the show emotional heft, while its cast helps sell the high-stakes turns. Julianne Nicholson also plays the enigmatic Samantha Redmond, also known as Sinatra, whose presence adds another unsettled piece to the puzzle.

A premise willing to take big swings
Paradise moves briskly and keeps widening its questions. Its ambition is part of the fun: the series is willing to shift genres and scale rather than stay inside the boundaries of a conventional murder case. Hulu describes it as an original story created by Dan Fogelman, not an adaptation of a book.

Where can Paradise falter?
The plot’s constant turns do not always translate into satisfying momentum. Some reviewers find the murder investigation insufficiently urgent, the conspiracy familiar, and several supporting characters underdeveloped. The frequent cliffhangers may keep an episode moving, but they can also feel placed to manufacture suspense rather than grow naturally from the story.
The result is a show that can be more compelling in its performances and emotional texture than in the mechanics of its plotting. Viewers who want every mystery to feel tightly earned may be less satisfied than those who enjoy following an ambitious premise while it unfolds.

Who should watch Paradise?
Try it if you like mysteries that build through flashbacks, a strong central performance, and genre-blending stories with room for major reveals. It is a less certain fit if you prefer restrained plotting, a consistently urgent investigation, or equally deep development for every member of a large cast.
Dan Fogelman, who also created This Is Us, conceived Paradise about a decade before its release, according to Sterling K. Brown’s interview with the Associated Press. The series’ interest in power is not incidental: Brown described its themes by asking who wields real power and whether it should be that way.
