Eden, Ron Howard’s film about European settlers on Floreana in the Galápagos, is rooted in a real 1920s–1930s settlement experiment. The people, arrival sequence and punishing isolation have historical support. But the Baroness and Robert Philippson’s disappearance—and allegations surrounding other deaths—remain unresolved, not a solved crime story. The film is therefore best understood as a dramatization of documented events mixed with disputed recollections and speculation.
Is Eden based on a true story?
Yes. The film draws on the “Galápagos Affair,” the real attempt by several European settlers to build lives on Floreana Island. The official AGC Studios film page describes the affair as an unsolved mystery. That distinction matters: the settlement and its central figures were real, but the most dramatic claims about what happened there are not all established facts.

Eden is not a direct adaptation of one book. Netflix Tudum says it is based on the historical incident rather than a specific book, while director Ron Howard told Forbes that accounts by two survivors conflicted and blamed one another. The film draws on a body of stories, not a single agreed narrative.
What is documented about the settlers?
TIME’s August 22, 2025 account by Olivia B. Waxman provides the clearest reported chronology. The groups arrived in stages, each with a different idea of what life on the remote island might become.

| When | Who arrived or what happened | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| 1929 | Friedrich Ritter and Dore Strauch moved to Floreana. | TIME identifies Ritter as a German doctor and Strauch as his former patient and partner; it reports that she had multiple sclerosis. TIME |
| Early 1932 | Heinz and Margret Wittmer arrived with Heinz’s son, Harry. | TIME reports that they hoped the climate would help Harry’s health and that Heinz had been traumatized by World War I. TIME |
| Later 1932 | Antonia Wagner von Wehrborn Bosquet, known as the Baroness, arrived with Rudolf Lorenz and Robert Philippson. | The Baroness’s ambition to build a hotel is reported as a real plan. Colorful stories about her earlier life should be treated as rumor, not settled biography. TIME |
| 1934 | The Baroness and Philippson disappeared. | Their fate remains unknown; the disappearance has no definitive explanation. TIME |
| End of 1934 | Ritter died after eating tainted chicken. | TIME reports the death and relays suspicions and a theory about Strauch’s delayed call for help; neither establishes that she poisoned him. TIME |
| 1935 | Strauch left Floreana for Germany; the Wittmers stayed. | TIME reported that the Wittmer descendants ran a hotel on the island at the time of its article. TIME |
What does the film get right about island life?
The settlers faced practical demands as well as interpersonal conflict. TIME describes the Wittmers gardening and hunting for food, and reports that Margret gave birth alone while Heinz and Harry were away. Howard’s team visited the cave associated with the birth, according to the same account. These details support the film’s depiction of isolation and subsistence hardship, though they do not make every scene or dialogue a verified reconstruction.
What happened to the Baroness and Robert Philippson?
They disappeared in 1934, and no definitive account of their fate is established. TIME says no one knows exactly why they disappeared. The claim that Lorenz killed them, possibly with Ritter’s help, is a theory attributed by TIME to writer Abbott Kahler—not a confirmed finding.

- House on Eden [Blu-Ray]
There were accusations, but an accusation is not proof. TIME reports that Ritter wrote a letter blaming the Wittmers for the pair’s deaths and says that accusation was not true. Lorenz later left Floreana and was found dead on Marchena; those events do not establish what happened to the missing pair. Claims around the disappearance and later deaths should therefore be presented as allegations or theories, not as a solved sequence of crimes.
How should the film’s dramatic claims be judged?
The useful distinction is not between two equally proven versions of events. It is between different kinds of evidence and how much they can establish:

- Reported chronology: the settlers’ arrivals and the disappearance are the basic historical framework described by TIME.
- Survivor recollection: Strauch and Wittmer each wrote about the experience, but their accounts differ. They are valuable firsthand perspectives, not neutral verdicts on one another.
- Contemporary accusation: Ritter’s letter blaming the Wittmers is an accusation, not evidence that they caused the disappearance.
- Later theory: Kahler’s proposed explanation is a later researcher’s theory as relayed by TIME, not a definitive resolution.
- Unresolved fact: the Baroness and Philippson’s fate remains unknown.
Screenwriter Noah Pink framed the story’s broader appeal to TIME this way: “In a time of rising fascism, how do we make our society a better place?” That is a thematic question, not evidence for any particular account of the disappearances.

Netflix Tudum names three books connected to the story: Dore Strauch’s Satan Came to Eden: A Survivor’s Account of the “Galápagos Affair”, Margret Wittmer’s Floreana: A Woman’s Pilgrimage to the Galápagos, and Abbott Kahler’s Eden Undone. Strauch’s and Wittmer’s books are contrasting survivor memoirs; Kahler’s is a later nonfiction reconstruction. None should be treated as a conclusive adjudication of the mystery. See Netflix Tudum’s account of the film and its book sources and Howard’s Forbes interview for their respective context.
