Yes—if the book has been downloaded to a compatible app or device before you go offline. You may need internet to buy or borrow it, download it, or sync it, but a saved copy can usually be read without a connection. Download and open the title while online to check that it is ready.
What you need for offline reading
Offline access depends on the app, device, and title. The book must be stored locally on your device; a title that is only available to stream still needs internet. You can use a compatible phone, tablet, computer, or e-reader—buying a dedicated e-reader is not usually necessary.
Before disconnecting, sign in to the reading app and purchase or borrow the title if needed. Download it, wait for the download to finish, and open it once while still online. If practical, briefly switch on airplane mode and try opening it again. That confirms the local copy opens at that moment, but it cannot guarantee future access if app, account, or loan conditions change.
How offline reading works in common apps

Check the download before you leave Wi-Fi
- Connect and sign in: Open the reading app on the device you plan to use offline.
- Get access to the title: Purchase or borrow it while connected if you have not already done so.
- Download the book: Choose the app’s download option, or select or open the title if that is how the app starts downloading it.
- Wait for completion: Look for the app’s downloaded status. Google Play Books shows a “Downloaded” indicator; Libby’s Shelf distinguishes downloaded items from titles that will stream.
- Test the local copy: Open the title before leaving. If useful, briefly enable airplane mode and try again.
Keep the app installed and the device available. A library page viewed in a browser is not a substitute for a downloaded copy: libbyapp.com, for example, always requires internet.

What may still require an internet connection
- Finding, buying, or borrowing a title, and downloading it in the first place.
- Syncing a library or reading progress between devices.
- Reading content that has not been downloaded or is offered only for streaming.
- Using a service through a browser when that browser version requires a connection.
Offline availability is not universal across every service, title, format, or license. Download the particular book to the device you will have with you, and check any loan period or format-specific restriction before relying on it.
