How does Franz Joseph die in real life?
Franz Joseph I died of pneumonia on November 21, 1916, at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. He was 86. The Habsburg history portal gives the date, cause and age, and places his death during the First World War: The First World War: A Habsburg History.
Schönbrunn’s 2025 visitor guide identifies the palace as both his birthplace and death place and says he reigned for 68 years: Schönbrunn Palace: Imperial Living. The two sources together establish the basic biographical account without requiring a dramatic explanation of how he became ill.
What is historical, and what is dramatized in The Empress?
Netflix describes The Empress as a six-part series about the young Elisabeth, later Empress of Austria, and her relationship with Franz Joseph. Katharina Eyssen is identified as its showrunner and head author. In Netflix’s account of the production, Eyssen says she sought to preserve the historical figures’ essences and not change dates or events, while imagining private situations, meetings and conversations that might have happened behind closed doors: Netflix’s series announcement.

That is the showrunner’s description of her approach, not an independent verification of every scene or interpretation. Treat documented dates and biographical facts separately from dialogue and private encounters created for the drama. Franz Joseph’s death date and cause are supported by historical reference sources; the series’ stated creative approach does not itself establish what was said or done in private.
