Abby and her companions end “Future Days” on the mountainside above Jackson, Wyoming. They are there to find Joel. Seattle comes up earlier as a possible place to go, but it is not where the closing scene shows them heading.
Where is Abby’s group at the end?
In the final shot, Abby and her armed companions look down toward Jackson from the mountains surrounding the settlement. They have reached the area as part of their search for Joel. The scene establishes their proximity to the town; it does not show them entering Jackson or reveal what happens next. Sky’s episode recap identifies the setting as Jackson, Wyoming.

Why do they mention Seattle?
Seattle is raised earlier in the episode as a possible refuge: Abby’s companions say Isaac might take them in there. Abby refuses to leave before they find Joel. The distinction is simple: Seattle is a possible destination after the search, while the closing image places the group near Jackson, where Joel is their immediate target. Sky’s recap describes the conversation and the final scene.
What do the sparkler and damaged pipe mean?
Before the cut to Abby’s group, a sparkler briefly lights cordyceps tendrils inside a damaged pipe in Jackson. It is an ominous warning that the town’s infrastructure work may have exposed a threat. The episode does not show an infected outbreak occurring; the pipe image foreshadows danger rather than confirming that the town has been breached. Sky’s recap recounts the closing images.

Why is Abby looking for Joel?
The premiere establishes Abby as a former Firefly seeking revenge for Joel’s actions at the Salt Lake City hospital, where he stopped the operation on Ellie. Her companions are involved in the search, but Abby’s anger is especially pronounced.
Actor Kaitlyn Dever described Abby as grieving a sudden loss and said, “So it’s a lot they have to figure out, but the anger and rage is just beginning for her.” The quote is from TheWrap’s April 20, 2025 interview.

How does the show’s introduction of Abby differ from the game?
The HBO adaptation reveals Abby’s motive earlier than The Last of Us Part II does. In the game, players encounter Abby by taking control of her; television cannot create that same direct identification through play. Co-creator Craig Mazin explained the difference to TheWrap: “You are introduced to Abby in the game by playing as Abby. So you are occupying her space. You are connected with her. That’s not how television works. So we do meet her in a different way.”
That earlier context changes the meaning of the closing image. Abby is not introduced simply as an approaching threat: viewers already know something about the loss and anger behind her pursuit. Mazin also said the story complicates easy divisions between hero and villain: “We do take away the easy handles that we usually have to hang on to a story — good, bad or even protagonist/antagonist. It’s hard to tell sometimes who the hero is.”

What the ending establishes—and what it leaves open
- Established: Abby’s group is outside Jackson, looking toward the settlement, and is searching for Joel.
- Not established: The group has not been shown reaching Joel, and the pipe image does not confirm that an outbreak has begun.
- Foreshadowed: The cordyceps in the damaged pipe signals possible danger for Jackson.
These points concern Season 2, Episode 1 only; they do not rely on later events.
Where to continue the story
The story continues in the HBO television adaptation. The Last of Us Part II is the interactive game that provides the source material for Abby’s story, and the show’s earlier disclosure of her motive is a notable difference in how the two versions introduce her.
