What happens at the end of Episode 5?
At Lakehill Hospital, Ellie tracks Nora into the basement, where spores make the environment dangerous to Nora. Ellie can follow because she is immune. Nora recognizes her as the immune girl Joel saved after killing the Fireflies, including Abby’s father. Ellie demands to know where Abby is; Nora refuses. Ellie strikes Nora with a metal pipe, and the episode cuts to a flashback of Joel waking Ellie in Jackson during a happier period in their relationship. Why does Ellie attack Nora?
She needs Abby’s whereabouts
Ellie’s immediate goal is practical: she wants information that will help her find Abby. Her larger motive is vengeance for Joel. When Nora refuses to help, Ellie uses violence to pursue that goal.
Nora makes Joel’s hospital decision personal
Nora’s recognition connects Ellie to the hospital where Joel killed the Fireflies to save her. Ellie insists she no longer cares what Joel did, but Nora’s refusal and knowledge of that history make this more than a search for a name or location. TIME’s recap reads the scene as a collision between Ellie’s pursuit of Abby and the consequences of Joel’s choice.

Does Nora die in the episode?
The episode cuts away before Nora’s fate is shown. Do not mistake the later game revelation for something the television episode depicts: TIME notes that the game later reveals Ellie tortured Nora until she gave up Abby’s whereabouts, and that Ellie is deeply shaken by what she has done. The episode leaves that outcome offscreen.
What does the Joel flashback add?
The cut to Joel waking Ellie in Jackson sets a tender memory against the brutality of the preceding scene. One reading is that Ellie’s grief and love for Joel are shaping the violence she commits in his name. The flashback does not, by itself, prove that she has forgiven him or resolved her doubts about what happened at the hospital.

Later creator commentary offers related context, but it is not dialogue from Episode 5. In a Television Academy interview published May 23, 2025, showrunner and co-creator Craig Mazin said Joel’s message to Ellie was: “If you find yourself in my position, I hope you do a little bit better than me.” Mazin explained that Joel hoped Ellie would not murder everyone in the hospital.
How does the show’s scene compare with the game?
HBO’s The Last of Us adapts Naughty Dog’s video-game series, as the Television Academy’s interview notes. TIME reports that the Nora sequence plays out similarly in the game, but the game later shows consequences beyond the episode’s cutaway. Keep those versions distinct: the show at this point shows Ellie striking Nora and then cuts away; the game later supplies the information about Nora giving up Abby’s location under torture.

HBO’s official companion podcast episode, “Episode 5 – ‘Feel Her Love,’” was published May 12, 2025. Hosted by Troy Baker, it features showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. Its description says they discuss the more menacing spores, the Seraphites’ whistle language, and why Mazin considered the Ellie–Nora showdown one of his favorite scenes. Apple lists the episode at 59 minutes.
For the season’s broader themes, Mazin told Bell Media that Ellie and Abby were moving forward in “moral trouble” as they faced the consequences of actions taken for loved ones. Druckmann described the story as examining terrible things people do in the name of love. Those comments speak to the season overall, rather than explaining every beat of this particular ending.
