The $217 million figure belongs to the original Smile, not Smile 2. The sequel opened in theaters on October 18, 2024, and its estimated opening weekend was slightly higher than the first film’s—but an opening estimate is not a lifetime worldwide total. Early reaction scores were also only a dated snapshot, not a current comparison.
What does the $217 million Smile figure mean?
TheWrap reported that the original Smile earned $217.4 million worldwide, including $109.5 million domestically. Those are reported box-office grosses for the first film, not Smile 2. The distinction matters because the sequel’s widely reported opening figure measures only its first weekend in theaters. TheWrap’s October 19, 2024 report is the source for both the original film’s gross and the sequel’s opening estimate.

Paramount lists Smile 2 as released on October 18, 2024. Parker Finn wrote and directed the sequel, with Naomi Scott starring as pop star Skye Riley. Its curse follows a performer, bringing fame and public performance into the premise in a way that distinguishes it from the original film’s setup. What were the first reactions to Smile 2?
In an October 20, 2024 report, TheWrap cited a Rotten Tomatoes snapshot of 83% from critics and 84% from audiences for Smile 2. Those percentages describe the scores reported at that time; they should not be presented as current ratings or as a direct comparison with the first Smile. A valid score comparison needs both films checked on the same review aggregator at the same time. TheWrap’s October 20 report gives the dated context for those early scores.
