Barry Seal was a real drug trafficker who later became an informant for federal authorities. Contemporary newspaper reports say three Colombians were convicted of first-degree murder for killing him in 1987. Seal also appears as a character in the 2016 film The Infiltrator, but the film is not a reliable stand-alone account of his life or the full record of his cooperation.
Who was Barry Seal?
Secondary reporting describes Seal as a drug trafficker who later worked as an informant for federal authorities. The available reporting establishes that broad outline, but not a complete chronology of his criminal activity, recruitment, or work for the government. Claims about specific operations or the terms of his cooperation should therefore be treated cautiously unless supported by a court record or another primary source.
Why did Barry Seal become an informant?
The available accounts identify Seal as an informant, but do not establish a complete explanation of his motives or the precise terms of any cooperation agreement. It would go beyond the evidence to present a single definitive reason or to describe every operation he supported.
What happened to Seal, and what is established about his murder?
Seal was killed in a machine-gun attack. In a report published May 14, 1987, The Washington Post reported that three Colombians were convicted of first-degree murder. The Los Angeles Times also reported the three convictions that day.

The Washington Post further reported that Seal’s undercover work led to federal charges against Jorge Ochoa, whom it described as an alleged Medellín cartel leader. That reporting does not, by itself, establish every detail of Seal’s role or the motive for his murder. The available sources do not provide the trial judgment or sentencing record, so they do not establish the defendants’ exact sentences or a complete set of judicial findings about motive.
How does the real story compare with The Infiltrator?
Seal appears as a character in the 2016 film The Infiltrator. ScreenRant’s article, syndicated through IMDb and published November 9, 2024, discusses Seal as a real informant who appears in the film. That is secondary entertainment reporting, not a court record or government history.

The supported historical points are limited: reporting describes Seal as a trafficker who became an informant, and contemporary newspaper coverage records the three murder convictions and connects his undercover work to federal charges against Ochoa. The available sources do not verify scene-by-scene accuracy or resolve every difference between the film and the historical record. Treat the movie as dramatized storytelling, not proof of what happened in a particular operation or conversation.
What the record does not establish
- The complete terms of Seal’s cooperation agreement.
- A comprehensive chronology of the operations he supported.
- The defendants’ exact sentences or the full judicial findings in the murder case.
- A proven government conspiracy or definitive account of every motive behind the killing.
Search results for United States v. Orozco, 630 F. Supp. 1418 (1986), should not be used to fill those gaps: that opinion concerns an unrelated wiretap matter, not Barry Seal.
