It delivers gruesome action, a lively young ensemble, and a bleak survival mission, though its mature rating does not mean it leaves superhero formulas behind.
What is Marvel Zombies about?
The series follows a group of survivors crossing a dystopian landscape after a zombie plague, hoping to find a possible way to end it. Disney describes it as a desperate search for a key to stopping the outbreak; the setup makes room for both survival horror and the familiar team-up dynamics of the MCU. Disney’s series guide lists four episodes, released together on Disney+.

This is a continuation of the animated zombie storyline introduced in What If…?, rather than an unrelated zombie story with Marvel characters dropped into it. D23 reports that the idea grew from conversations about extending that episode. Director, writer, and executive producer Bryan Andrews described the pitch this way: “They said, ‘Let’s do a sequel to that episode — but let’s do four episodes, like a mini-movie event.’” D23’s interview also identifies Andrews as a director and executive producer on What If…?; The Walt Disney Company’s account of the series’ development names Zeb Wells in its writing context. The Walt Disney Company’s production background offers more on that connection.
Does the horror make it a good time?
Yes, if you want superhero action with a real appetite for gore. The zombie premise gives the animation permission to be more graphic than the usual MCU adventure, and the show uses that freedom for grisly encounters and forceful horror set pieces. The violence is an attraction, but it is not a wholesale reinvention of Marvel storytelling: recognizable character beats and franchise connective tissue remain in the mix.

That combination is where the series’ appeal and its limits meet. GamesRadar praises the gruesome kills, MCU Easter eggs, and expansion of the What If…? story. RogerEbert.com argues that the mature rating does not free the show from familiar MCU formulas. TechRadar sees cinematic, dread-oriented set pieces, while also pointing to animation limitations and uneven execution. These are distinct critical reactions, not a single consensus: whether the MCU familiarity feels like welcome connective tissue or a constraint depends on what you want from the horror. GamesRadar’s review, RogerEbert.com’s review, and TechRadar’s review make the differences clear.
Does the ensemble carry the story?
The appeal is not only seeing familiar heroes survive a horror scenario; it is watching a younger group shoulder the adventure. GamesRadar finds the strongest material in the young heroes’ journey, a useful counterweight to the spectacle and references. The series’ reported voice cast includes Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop, and Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, alongside Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, and Awkwafina as Katy Chen. D23 lists these cast members; voice-cast information and classification can vary by territory and listing.

Is four episodes the right length?
The all-at-once, four-episode format suits a story designed as a compact event: it can move through a survival journey without asking viewers to commit to a long season. But a short episode count does not automatically make the arc perfectly paced. The critics differ on how well the expansion works: GamesRadar welcomes the larger canvas, while TechRadar describes execution as uneven. If you are deciding whether to start it, expect a brisk, finite watch rather than an open-ended series, but do not assume every story beat lands equally well.
Is Marvel Zombies worth watching?
For viewers curious about the What If…? zombie episode, or anyone who wants an animated MCU story with more explicit horror, it is an easy recommendation. The gore is a genuine part of the experience, and the younger heroes give the adventure a center beyond cameos and Easter eggs. Go in expecting a darker, bloodier variation on the MCU—not a complete escape from its rhythms—and the series earns its “bloody good time” promise more often than not.

What about the Marvel Zombies comic?
Marvel also lists a physical Marvel Zombies trade paperback, but it is a comic collection, not a home-video edition or a direct adaptation of this animated show. Marvel’s catalog says the paperback was published October 1, 2008, credits Robert Kirkman as writer and Sean Phillips as penciller, and collects issues #1–5. Marvel’s catalog entry has the collection details.
