Spoilers for all of The Umbrella Academy Season 4, including the finale. Lila and Five fall in love after spending seven years together on the multiverse subway, even though only hours pass for their family. Lila returns to Diego torn between the life she shared with Five and her feelings for her husband. Actor Ritu Arya said seeing Diego again “throws a spanner in the works”—but the finale ends before Lila makes a lasting choice.
Why are Lila and Five together for seven years?
In Season 4, Five and Lila become stranded on a subway that connects different universes at the same moment in time. They spend seven years trying to understand its routes and find their way home. For their family above ground, however, only a few hours pass. The mismatch means the pair build a shared life across years while Diego and the children experience a much shorter absence. How does the subway journey turn into a romance?
Their bond grows from friendship into romance amid isolation, constant friction and years spent relying on one another. Showrunner Steve Blackman said the two are more alike than they admit: “They’re constantly fighting and bickering, but they’re the most alike.” He said that, after seven years together, a romance made sense to him. Arya likewise described the connection as natural: “you’re going to feel incredibly connected with someone, no matter what,” adding that “of course there’s love there.” These are the perspectives of the showrunner and actor on why the relationship develops, rather than a claim that the pair’s time together erases Lila’s existing family ties. Why does seeing Diego again “throw a spanner in the works”?
Lila returns to a marriage already under strain. She and Diego are married parents of two, and Season 4 shows them navigating life without their powers and a deteriorating relationship. Their history predates the subway: Netflix’s character background says they first fell in love after meeting in Season 2, with their relationship continuing toward a family after the Season 3 reset. Arya told PEOPLE via AOL that Lila’s priority while away was getting back to her children. But, she said, seeing Diego “throws a spanner in the works” because Lila did not expect her feelings for him to return after spending years with Five. Arya characterized her as “very torn,” not as someone who has already settled the question of whom she loves more.

What does Lila’s relationship with Five mean for Diego?
Blackman’s account gives Diego some responsibility without making him the sole cause of the marriage’s problems. He said Diego realized he had let Lila down “in the marriage and in that relationship.” He also described the marriage as having deteriorated, and said he did not see Lila and Diego getting back together if events continued. In his interview with TheWrap, Blackman said he thought Lila probably would have stayed with Five in a hypothetical continuation: “She loved both men for different reasons.” That is the showrunner’s speculation about a future the series does not depict—not a choice Lila makes on screen.

No. The finale closes off an ordinary relationship resolution: the Hargreeves, including Lila, Diego and Five, agree to let the Cleanse consume them so the one true timeline can be restored. Netflix Tudum’s finale explanation describes their sacrifice, while Blackman told TheWrap that they cease to exist rather than technically die. Because the story ends there, viewers never see whether Lila would have chosen to rebuild a life with Diego, remain with Five, or make another decision in a continuing timeline.
