In the 2024 horror-thriller Succubus, Brendan Bradley’s Chris begins as a passive, disconnected new father who joins a dating app while his marriage is failing. His match with Adra, played by Rachel Cook, draws him into a frightening mystery. Bradley described Chris’s journey as a move toward fighting for what matters to him; Cook said she was drawn to exploring Adra’s darker side.
How Chris and Adra set the story in motion
Succubus follows Chris as he joins StarCrossed “just to see what’s out there.” He is a new father in a failing marriage, and his match with the mysterious Adra becomes an increasingly consuming encounter. The synopsis describes her powers of seduction and manipulation pulling Chris into a mystery as his life unravels. His friend Eddie and Adra’s stalker, Dr. Zephyr, also circle her as her power grows and her true nature comes into view. Rue Morgue’s synopsis lays out those story elements.
The film is not framed in the available descriptions as a direct retelling of succubus mythology. Its starting point is recognizably contemporary: app-based dating, loneliness, and a relationship that becomes dangerous. That premise gives Chris and Adra’s contrasting approaches room to shape the horror.
Bradley’s reading of Chris: from passive to fighting back
Bradley described Chris as initially “disconnected, self-pitying and passive,” then said the character goes on a journey to fight for what he cares about. That is the actor’s interpretation of Chris’s progression, rather than a claim that the character simply becomes a conventional hero. Bradley’s wording leaves the change rooted in Chris’s flaws and the choices he makes along the way.

“I think Chris does start off disconnected, self-pitying and passive. But he goes on a hell of ride to fight for what he cares about – ultimately doing something that take a lot of …checks notes… balls.”
Bradley also spoke about playing someone alone and looking for connection. Release-period interview coverage notes that many scenes unfold through screens, a choice that fits a story in which intimacy begins at a remove. Cook’s interest in Adra’s darker side
Cook said she wanted the chance to explore her “dark side,” and that the script’s unusual, trippy quality made her want to take part. Adra’s identity as a seductive, dangerous entity gives that interest a particular shape: the character’s appeal and threat are bound together as Chris is drawn further in.
“I was really curious to play in my dark side hehe. It’s also a very intense thing to bring upon yourself… but I wanted to experience this. The script was also just so trippy I wanted to be a part of it. Something unique.”

A dating story that turns toward surreal horror
Grimmfest’s 2024 listing describes the film’s first half as an uncomfortable cyber-noir examining online relationships and toxic masculinity, followed by a pronounced tonal and narrative shift when Adra’s identity is revealed. That is the festival’s characterization of the film’s structure, not a universal verdict on how viewers will experience it. Grimmfest lists the English-language film at 103 minutes. Grimmfest’s listing provides that description.
Writer-director R.J. Daniel Hanna explained the intended approach to Chris’s flaws: the filmmakers wanted to use the “horny online guy” trope without making flawed men into automatic villains. His framing suggests a character whose repeated mistakes matter, rather than a figure excused by the film simply because he is lonely.

“For Succubus, we wanted to take the trope of the horny online guy, who do definitely exhibit weakness, but also show that even if they’re flawed they’re not villains, just people who mess up (and mess up and mess up)”
That tension is central to the character angle: Chris’s passivity and poor decisions set the story moving, while the increasingly frightening circumstances force him to confront what he values. Adra, meanwhile, is not just a mysterious match but the source of a revelation that changes the story’s register.
