At the 97th Academy Awards on March 2, 2025, Anora led the night with five Oscars, including Best Picture. The four “snubs and surprises” below are an editorial selection, not official Academy categories: the winners and nominees are confirmed results, while calling an outcome surprising or a snub reflects interpretation.
Who won the 2025 Oscars?
The 97th Academy Awards honored films released in 2024 at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on March 2, 2025. The Academy’s official results list these top winners:
- Best Picture: Anora
- Actor in a Leading Role: Adrien Brody, The Brutalist
- Actress in a Leading Role: Mikey Madison, Anora
- Actor in a Supporting Role: Kieran Culkin, A Real Pain
- Actress in a Supporting Role: Zoe Saldaña, Emilia Pérez
Anora also won Director and Original Screenplay for Sean Baker, plus Film Editing, for five awards overall. Other notable results included Conclave for Adapted Screenplay; Flow for Animated Feature; Dune: Part Two for Visual Effects and Sound; Wicked for Costume Design and Production Design; The Substance for Makeup and Hairstyling; and I’m Still Here for International Feature Film. The Associated Press reported that Paul Tazewell became the first Black man to win the Oscar for Costume Design, for Wicked.
What were the biggest surprises and snubs?
These four storylines distinguish the official outcome from reactions to it. They are not a definitive ranking of voter expectations: the available contemporaneous coverage frames some results as surprises, but does not establish a universal pre-ceremony consensus.

1. Anora’s five-Oscar sweep
Anora won Best Picture, Director, Actress in a Leading Role, Original Screenplay, and Film Editing. That concentration of the night’s top honors made the film the ceremony’s clear headline winner. The results establish the sweep; they do not, on their own, show that every win was unexpected.
2. Mikey Madison won over Demi Moore
Madison took Actress in a Leading Role for Anora. Demi Moore, nominated for The Substance, did not win. The Hollywood Reporter included Moore’s loss in its contemporaneous snubs-and-surprises coverage, making the result a reported point of debate—not an objectively incorrect decision.

3. Flow beat The Wild Robot for Animated Feature
Flow won Animated Feature Film, while The Wild Robot was among the nominees. The Associated Press described the result as Flow beating The Wild Robot. That captures the race’s surprise angle without assuming that one nominee was universally considered the favorite.
4. Dune: Part Two won two technical Oscars
Dune: Part Two received Oscars for Visual Effects and Sound. Those wins matter when weighing claims that the film was overlooked: it was recognized in two technical categories. The verified results here do not establish a specific, sourced snub in another category, so calling the film “shut out” would be inaccurate.
