Spoilers ahead. It Comes at Night does not reveal a definitive cause for the outbreak, a complete chain of infection, or a literal thing that arrives after dark. Its ending is deliberately unresolved. The strongest reading is a tragedy about how fear and suspicion fracture people trying to survive together—not a mystery with a hidden pathogen answer.
What happens at the end of It Comes at Night?
After an unnamed catastrophe, Travis and his parents live under strict rules in an isolated home. When another family arrives seeking shelter, the households attempt to share space and scarce supplies. The arrangement depends on trust, but fear steadily turns ordinary uncertainties into perceived threats. The ending brings that fragile coexistence to a devastating break.

The film’s official synopsis describes the story as moving from the dangers outside toward “the horrors within.” That phrase captures the ending’s shift in emphasis: the catastrophe creates the conditions, but the immediate tragedy comes from what the characters do to one another under pressure. This is an interpretation of the film’s effect, not a definitive plot key from its director. A24’s film page
Is the ending a dream, or did you miss a twist?
The ending is not presented as a puzzle whose solution explains everything that came before. Writer-director Trey Edward Shults said he intentionally leaves questions unanswered because that openness is central to the story. He hoped the film could mean different things to different viewers. In a 2017 interview with Carlos Aguilar for MovieMaker Magazine, Shults put it this way: “I think I leave things unanswered because that’s what this story is, and that’s what the core of the movie is about.”

- A father will stop at nothing to protect his wife and son from a malevolent, mysterious presence terrorizing them right outside their doorstep.
So ambiguity is not, by itself, evidence that the ending is a dream or that a definitive explanation has been hidden. The film leaves key matters unsettled on purpose. Viewers can make inferences, but those should be distinguished from what the movie confirms.
Who infected whom?
The film does not provide a confirmed, comprehensive infection chain. It establishes an illness and the characters’ fear of exposure, but it does not settle every question about how the disease began, how it spread, or who infected whom. A24’s synopsis calls the disaster an unnamed cataclysm; a 2017 Vogue interview by Taylor Antrim discusses a virus but does not supply a complete medical explanation.

Shults said the disease or apocalypse mattered less to him than the people in the house and the dynamics between them. That focus helps explain why the film does not resolve the outbreak like a conventional epidemiological mystery: the illness is the pressure shaping the household, while fear and distrust are the story’s central conflict.
What does “it” mean in the title?
There is no director-confirmed, single referent for “it.” A grounded thematic reading is that the title points both to the danger beyond the house and to the fear and mistrust that enter it. Shults discussed the film in terms of paranoia, fear, and power dynamics among people trapped together; he did not identify a specific monster or explain the title as a literal reveal.

That leaves room for a supernatural or symbolic interpretation, but neither should be presented as established fact. The film’s uncertainty is part of its design, not proof that a particular unseen creature is responsible for the events.

Shults described the ending as central to what the film is about. In his 2017 interview with Taylor Antrim for Vogue, he said, “All is broken,” and explained that the story was leading there; avoiding that ending would have felt dishonest to him.
The bleakness follows from the collapse of the household’s fragile order. The characters act under the logic of survival, but suspicion makes other people seem like threats before certainty is possible. The result is not a neat lesson about who was right; it is a tragedy in which fear has a moral cost and the effort to protect a family helps destroy the fragile possibility of living alongside another one.
