Twisters honors Jo Harding and Bill Harding through the legacy of their storm research, character echoes, and visual callbacks—not by bringing either character back. Director Lee Isaac Chung said the 2024 film is a standalone story whose leads are new characters.
Do Jo and Bill return in Twisters?
No. Helen Hunt’s Jo Harding and Bill Paxton’s Bill Harding do not return as characters in the 2024 film. Chung said, “None of the characters from the original are returning,” while explaining that the legacy of their work remains in the story. The Associated Press reported his explanation in 2024.

That distinction matters: Twisters is not a continuation of Jo and Bill’s personal story, even though it shares a world and some of the earlier film’s storm-research ideas. Its central characters are Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones), Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), and Javi (Anthony Ramos).
How does the film carry forward Jo and Bill’s work?
Dorothy and Muskogee State University
The clearest story-world callbacks are Dorothy, the tornado-sensor device associated with the original researchers, and references to the fictional Muskogee State University. Chung identified both as signs that the earlier characters’ work has a legacy in the new film. These references connect the films without implying that Jo or Bill is present.

Kate echoes Bill, but is a new character
Edgar-Jones said Kate’s instincts make her feel more like Bill Harding: Kate is smart, attuned to the wind, and responsive to what she senses in a storm. The actor also described Kate’s story as darker, centered on returning to a place and finding her way back to herself. That is a comparison of temperament and approach—not evidence that Kate is related to Bill or Jo.
The new film’s starting point is different. The British Film Institute’s contemporaneous overview describes Kate as a student storm chaser who saw three friends killed in a tornado and later returns to Oklahoma with her survivor friend Javi. The BFI frames it as a loose sequel, a useful description of its relationship to the 1996 film: it carries forward a premise, not the original protagonists’ storyline.

Mirrored moments and costumes
Edgar-Jones has also said that Twisters includes moments and costumes mirrored from the original. Her interview does not identify every instance, so those remarks establish that visual and scene-level homage was intended, not an exhaustive checklist of callbacks.
A small tribute through James Paxton
Anthony Ramos cited a cameo by James Paxton, Bill Paxton’s son, as one of the “little nuggets of the spirit of the first film.” Ramos’s comment makes the cameo a cast-identified tribute detail; it is separate from a return by Bill Harding as a character.

What kind of story continuity did the filmmakers want?
Chung has described the first Twister as a remarriage story about Jo and Bill, with the storms surrounding their relationship. He aimed for the new film’s tension and occasional levity to emerge from its own changing interpersonal dynamics. Producer Steven Spielberg similarly said the storms provide a background for characters to explore relationships. The Atlantic discussed Chung’s approach and Spielberg’s perspective.
So the most meaningful continuity is thematic rather than biographical: both films use dangerous weather as the pressure that brings people together and tests how they relate to one another. In Twisters, that dynamic belongs to Kate, Tyler, Javi, and the other new characters—not to Jo and Bill.
