John Wick 5 is in development at Lionsgate, but the studio has not announced a filming start or release date. A later report says Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski have settled on a story idea they are excited about; Lionsgate chairman Adam Fogelson declined to give a timeline. Those updates confirm movement on the project, not a production schedule.
Is John Wick 5 confirmed?
Yes. Lionsgate executive Jenefer Brown said in a March 11, 2025 interview that the studio was developing a fifth John Wick film. Lionsgate’s March 2025 investor presentation also listed John Wick 5 among announced franchise projects. That makes it a studio-backed project, not merely a rumor. Brown’s confirmation and the SEC-filed investor presentation establish its development status.
Brown also said Wick “may be” dead, leaving the character’s fate open rather than confirming whether he will return in the next film. The ending of John Wick: Chapter 4 therefore has not been definitively resolved by this development announcement. Her comments on Wick’s fate did not settle what the sequel’s story will show.
What did Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski say?
In an April 26, 2026 report, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson was quoted as saying Reeves and Stahelski had found a core idea they were excited about. Fogelson also cautioned that there were “a lot of steps” and said he did not want to put a timeline on the project. The report attributes his remarks to a Business Insider interview; it is a secondary account of that interview. Read the reported update.

This is a meaningful update about creative development and Reeves’ involvement in shaping an idea. It is not a definitive announcement that he has signed on to star, that filming is scheduled, or that the story will bring Wick back in a particular way.
When will John Wick 5 come out?
No release date or filming start is established by these announcements. Fogelson explicitly declined to provide a timeline, and neither an “in development” label nor an idea the filmmakers like supplies a reliable date. Any specific release window would go beyond what Lionsgate’s cited statements support.

Which John Wick projects are expected first?
The April 2026 report says the Caine spin-off and an animated prequel are expected before John Wick 5. Lionsgate’s March 2025 presentation separately listed the animated prequel among announced franchise projects. The presentation also described the AAA John Wick video game as in development; that is a separate project and does not indicate when the film will be made. Lionsgate’s presentation also lists four released films, the fifth film, and franchise extensions, but gives no sequel release schedule.
