Berlin is both: Netflix calls it a spinoff of Money Heist (original Spanish title La casa de papel), and its main story takes place earlier in Berlin’s life. It follows his criminal career and a separate crew before the Spanish Mint events in the original series.
Why both labels fit
“Spinoff” describes how Berlin relates to the franchise: it centers on a character from Money Heist, played again by Pedro Alonso, while introducing a different crew. “Prequel” describes its place in the story’s chronology: Netflix sets Berlin’s adventures in his “golden years,” before he is caught up in the Spanish Mint heist. Netflix’s official materials use the spinoff label and place the story before those events, so the terms are complementary, not competing.
Netflix’s 2022 production announcement described the idea as introducing a new gang around Berlin in a different emotional state. Creators Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato said: “We loved the idea of introducing a new gang around Berlin in a completely different emotional state.”
What the original series follows—and what Berlin changes
Money Heist follows Berlin as part of the events surrounding the Royal Mint of Spain. Berlin shifts the focus to earlier heists and a crew assembled around him, rather than continuing the Mint hostage situation. In Netflix’s 2023 series announcement, the setup is a jewel heist valued at €44 million, for which Berlin recruits people from a gang he has stolen with. The series was created by Pina and Martínez Lobato, with Alonso returning as Berlin.

Where the 2026 continuation fits
Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine is a later installment in the same Money Heist and Berlin universe. Netflix announced its global premiere for May 15, 2026. The new story takes Berlin and Damián to Seville, where they reunite the gang for another heist. Netflix’s announcement and Tudum guide describe this continuation.
How popular was Berlin?
Netflix reported in 2026 that the first installment of Berlin reached 53 million views and 348 million hours viewed, and spent seven consecutive weeks in Netflix’s non-English TV Top 10. These are figures reported by Netflix, not independent audience measurements; they indicate reach, not where the series sits in the story chronology. Netflix’s franchise announcement gives the figures.
