No. Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant is a fictional story, not a dramatization of a documented rescue or the biography of real people named John Kinley and Ahmed. Its setting and the relationship between a U.S. service member and an Afghan interpreter draw on real experiences, but the characters and specific rescue plot are invented.
Are Ahmed and John Kinley real?
No. John Kinley, the U.S. Army sergeant played by Jake Gyllenhaal, and Ahmed, the Afghan interpreter played by Dar Salim, are fictional characters. Director Guy Ritchie researched relationships between interpreters and American military personnel, but that background does not mean the film recounts one real pair’s story. Radio Times describes the central characters as fictional creations.

What real experiences inspired the film?
Ritchie said documentaries about Afghanistan showed him how interpreters and American colleagues worked together, and how promises of eventual relocation could become complicated and dangerous. In a TIME interview published April 20, 2023, he described his interest as the bond between individuals and what they are willing to do to honor it. These influences inform the film’s themes; they do not establish that its particular characters or plot events happened.
Gyllenhaal’s interest in the role was also influenced by his friend Zachary Iscol’s experience with Iraqi interpreter Khalid Abood. Iscol worked to help Abood and his family obtain U.S. visas after Abood faced danger. That real story took place in Iraq and is an influence on Gyllenhaal, not a direct account of the fictional Afghan characters in The Covenant. Fox News reported on the connection in May 2023.

Why does the relationship feel realistic?
The film’s central bond reflects a real feature of work alongside military interpreters: the job could involve more than translating words. Afghan interpreter Shafiullah Sahil told PBS that he helped explain local culture and supported the team in operational situations. U.S. Army veteran Matt Watters, discussing the film, stressed the distinction between its fiction and the real bond it evokes. In the PBS interview published June 18, 2023, Watters said, “It’s fiction, just wanna be very clear about that.”

The film’s relocation theme has a real-world counterpart in the Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program for people who worked with the U.S. government or its forces. The U.S. Department of State Office of Inspector General reported that 15,678 Afghan SIV applications were in process as of May 31, 2022. The OIG also cautioned that applicants’ physical locations were not always known. This is a dated historical count, not a current estimate of the backlog. The September 2022 Inspector General report provides the figure and its qualification.
