Spoilers for the ending of Mountainhead. Jeff survives the attempt on his life, then agrees to work with Venis while refusing to bring Randall into the deal. But Jeff makes clear that this is no peace treaty: he expects to come after Venis eventually, and Venis welcomes the prospect. The film ends with their alliance intact for now—and its future deliberately uncertain.
What happens at the end of Mountainhead?
Jeff survives after Venis, Randall, and Souper try to kill him. He later agrees to a deal with Venis, but excludes Randall. Jeff warns Venis, “I can come inside. But I’ll come for you in the end, you know that.” Venis replies, “That’s what’s exciting.”

The exchange makes the terms of their relationship plain: they will cooperate, but neither mistakes cooperation for safety or loyalty. Jeff expects their contest to continue, and Venis is energized rather than deterred by that prospect. The film does not show what happens next or establish which man will ultimately prevail.
Why does Jeff make a deal with Venis?
The deal is a strategic choice, not a reconciliation. Cory Michael Smith, who plays Venis, described the characters’ bond as a shared “respect for the game.” Ramy Youssef, who plays Jeff, emphasized that Jeff can recognize human harm and still choose to participate. Their comments support reading the agreement as provisional and self-interested: each sees an opportunity in working with the other, even while expecting future conflict. Is Jeff a hero?
Jeff may be more attuned than the others to the human consequences of the crisis, but the film does not present him as an innocent alternative to them. He has technology that could help address the violence, yet he remains ambitious and chooses to stay in the struggle for power. Youssef called Jeff potentially “the most dangerous character in the movie” because he has empathy: he can see the damage and still play the game. CinemaBlend’s interview with Youssef and Smith
How does the ending connect to the film’s crisis?
The crisis follows the release of a deepfake product by Venis’s company. The fabricated images inflame hatred online and contribute to real-world violence, while the executives consider how the resulting upheaval might serve their ambitions. TIME’s interview with writer-director Jesse Armstrong describes the characters as composites—not direct stand-ins for particular technology executives—and quotes him calling them “Frankenstein monsters with limbs sewn together.” TIME’s interview with Armstrong

The last deal extends that satire: even after catastrophe and attempted murder, the men treat events as a contest and an opening for greater control. TheWrap’s interview with the cast also describes the unsettling contrast between the characters scrolling through images of crisis and their insulation from the people suffering in it. What remains unresolved?
The film confirms that Jeff and Venis make a deal and that Jeff intends to challenge Venis later. It does not confirm whether Jeff escapes the arrangement, whether Venis outmaneuvers him, or whether their cooperation lasts. That open future is central to the ending: the deal gives them a reason to work together without ending the rivalry that makes the partnership dangerous.
