Murphy must contend with the hazards of the journey and the people around him while hoping to return to his daughter.
The film is set in Depression-era Oregon in 1933. Its prison-camp and gold-smuggling plot is presented as a fictional survival story, not as an account of a specific documented historical event.

The Haifa International Film Festival credits Matthew Booi, Matthew Chapman and Shelby Gaines as writers. A 2025 report based on a press release describes the screenplay as an original script by those writers, based on an original story by Booi and Leo Scherman.
Is it an epic or a historical account?
Although the film may be promoted with “historical epic” language, descriptions of The Weight more specifically call it a historical drama, period drama, survival tale or adventure thriller. The 1930s setting gives it a historical backdrop, but the available descriptions do not establish that Murphy, Clancy or the gold-smuggling scheme represents a particular real case.
