What the “eight love interests” list actually represents
The eight names come from an entertainment article about Maestro, not from a definitive historical record of eight confirmed romantic partners. That list names Felicia Montealegre, David Oppenheim, Thomas Cothran, Kunihiko Hashimoto, Azaria Rapoport, Dimitri Mitropoulos, Howard Rosenman, and Alan Helms. The sources available for this account do not independently confirm every name as Bernstein’s lover, so the count is best understood as the article’s list rather than a verified tally of relationships.

There is also a spelling distinction: Netflix calls the character in the film Tommy Cathron, while TIME and Biography.com use Tom Cothran for the historical relationship. Netflix’s cast information establishes that Oppenheim and Tommy Cathron are characters in Maestro; casting alone does not prove the nature of their real-life relationships with Bernstein.
Felicia Montealegre: Bernstein’s wife and central relationship
Actor Felicia Montealegre met Bernstein at a party in 1946, introduced by pianist Claudio Arrau, according to the Leonard Bernstein Office. They became engaged soon afterward, but had broken off the engagement by December 1947. Montealegre later had an intimate relationship with actor Richard Hart, with whom she had performed. Hart died in her arms on January 2, 1951; Montealegre and Bernstein resumed their relationship soon after.

They married on September 9, 1951, and had three children. Their marriage lasted until Montealegre’s death from cancer in 1978. The sequence matters: their relationship was not an uninterrupted courtship leading directly to marriage, but a bond that broke, resumed, and developed amid other relationships and changing expectations.
What Montealegre knew about Bernstein’s relationships with men
A letter from Montealegre in the Leonard Bernstein collection, reproduced by the Library of Congress, speaks directly to Bernstein’s love affairs with men. She wrote, “let’s try and see what happens if you are free to do as you like,” followed by “but without guilt and confession, please!” The same letter says, “I am willing to accept you as you are, without being a martyr or sacrificing myself to the L.B. altar. … I happen to love you very much.” The Library dates it only to early in their relationship; a precise year is not established in its account.

The letter shows awareness and an effort to negotiate their relationship, not that the arrangement was simple or painless. TIME reports that Bernstein had affairs with men before and during the marriage and that Montealegre knew about his partners. TIME also quotes biographer Paul R. Laird describing her as Bernstein’s “beard,” while reporting Laird’s view that the couple’s love was real. That interpretation belongs to Laird; it should not be treated as an uncontested summary of their marriage.
Tom Cothran: the best-supported additional long-term relationship
TIME and Biography.com describe Bernstein’s relationship with Tom Cothran, a musician and music director whom Bernstein met in 1971. TIME reports that Bernstein lived with Cothran during a temporary separation from Montealegre in 1976–1977. After Montealegre was diagnosed with cancer, Bernstein returned and cared for her. This is the clearest additional long-term relationship in the reporting cited here, but it does not make every other name on the eight-person list equally documented.

The list also includes David Oppenheim, Kunihiko Hashimoto, Azaria Rapoport, Dimitri Mitropoulos, Howard Rosenman, and Alan Helms. The available official and archival material does not establish each of these people as a romantic partner. In particular, Netflix’s descriptions of Oppenheim and Tommy Cathron are evidence about the film’s cast and characters, not historical confirmation of a romance. Where a source does not support a relationship claim, it is more accurate to leave the claim unverified than to present it as fact.

The evidence points to a marriage shaped by love, separation, and Bernstein’s relationships with men—not to a straightforward choice between a “real” marriage and a sham. Montealegre’s letter documents her awareness and the terms she tried to set; Laird’s “beard” description is a biographer’s interpretation, alongside his view that there was genuine love. The film’s central relationship can therefore be understood as a complex partnership without claiming that every detail or every person in the eight-name list is historically settled.
