IMAX announced on January 26, 2024, that Dune: Part Two would screen in IMAX 70mm at selected theatres. The company later said 12 IMAX locations worldwide presented the film in 15/70mm. That limited film-projection plan followed Oppenheimer’s major IMAX run, but the records attached to the two movies measure different things: Dune: Part Two set a second-weekend global market-share record for IMAX, while Oppenheimer had the higher cumulative IMAX gross at the Q1 2024 reporting point.
Where could you see Dune: Part Two in IMAX 70mm?
IMAX’s January 26, 2024 announcement named selected theatres for the film’s 70mm engagement. The excerpt identifies Universal Cinema AMC at CityWalk Hollywood in Universal City, California, and AMC Lincoln Square 13 in New York City. These are two named U.S. venues, not a complete list of the global locations.

IMAX later reported that Dune: Part Two was presented in IMAX 15/70mm at 12 selected locations worldwide. Neither the full roster nor every location’s dates is established by these announcements. The engagement was part of the film’s March 2024 theatrical rollout, not a current showtime listing. IMAX’s January 2024 announcement and its later release provide the original announcement and global count.
Was Dune: Part Two shot on 70mm film?
No. The distinction is between how a movie is captured and how it is projected. Dune: Part Two was shot entirely with IMAX digital cameras; the 15/70mm engagements used film projection prints. Calling it a film-camera-shot IMAX production would conflate those two stages.

IMAX described an exclusive expanded aspect ratio of 1.90:1, with a 1.43:1 expanded aspect ratio at selected locations. Those aspect ratios describe the image presentation; they do not mean the film was captured on IMAX film cameras. IMAX’s format and performance announcement separately identifies the 15/70mm presentations and the 12 selected locations.
How did the IMAX records compare with Oppenheimer?
The word “record” refers to different measures in this comparison. In a March 11, 2024 release, IMAX said Dune: Part Two earned 22% of its global box office in its second weekend—the biggest global weekend market share in IMAX’s history. IMAX reported $27.7 million in global IMAX box office for that weekend and $72.4 million cumulatively at that point. The 22% is a share of the film’s global box office for that weekend, not a record for total lifetime IMAX revenue.

At IMAX’s Q1 2024 earnings call, CEO Rich Gelfond said Oppenheimer had crossed $190 million in IMAX box office, while Dune: Part Two had passed $143 million. Those were cumulative figures at that later reporting point, and Oppenheimer’s figure was higher. A record weekend share for Dune: Part Two therefore does not mean it surpassed Oppenheimer’s cumulative IMAX gross. IMAX’s March release and its Q1 2024 earnings call report the distinct measures.
What does the premium-format figure say?
The Associated Press reported that premium large-format screens, including IMAX and 70mm, accounted for 48% of Dune: Part Two’s opening-weekend business. That figure combines formats; it is not an IMAX 70mm-only statistic. AP quoted Warner Bros. domestic distribution president Jeff Goldstein saying, “It really captured the marketplace,” and, “It’s a cultural moment globally.” The AP report gives the broader premium-large-format context.

Why did IMAX 70mm matter to the rollout?
IMAX’s announcement placed Dune: Part Two in the 2024 event-film conversation after Oppenheimer demonstrated strong demand for large-format theatrical presentation. IMAX later characterized its role in Dune: Part Two as capturing a record share of the film’s box office. The company’s CEO, Rich Gelfond, said: “It’s clear that IMAX continues to anchor the incredible run of ‘Dune: Part Two’, as we capture a record share of the film’s box office thanks to legions of fans worldwide unwilling to settle for anything less than the IMAX Experience,”
The scale of the 15/70mm plan was selective: 12 locations worldwide, alongside the film’s digital IMAX presentations. That limited print engagement is separate from the film’s broader IMAX rollout and from the box-office measures used to describe its performance.
