In story order, watch Temple of Doom, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Last Crusade, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, then Dial of Destiny. For a first viewing, release order is the better starting point: it follows how audiences first met Indy and how the films introduce each era.
Indiana Jones movies in chronological order
The story timeline begins with a prequel: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom takes place before Raiders of the Lost Ark, even though it was released later. Lucasfilm identifies Raiders as a 1936 story and Dial of Destiny as set in 1969. The exact years for the other entries are commonly cited chronology dates; Lucasfilm’s production pages establish their broader period rather than each precise year.
| Story order | Film | Story year | Release year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom | 1935, commonly cited; secondary chronology | 1984 |
| 2 | Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark | 1936, stated by Lucasfilm | 1981 |
| 3 | Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade | 1938, commonly cited; secondary chronology | 1989 |
| 4 | Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull | 1957, commonly cited; secondary chronology | 2008 |
| 5 | Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny | 1969, stated by Lucasfilm | 2023 |
1. Temple of Doom — 1935
Indy travels with singer Willie Scott and Short Round to investigate a village’s stolen Sankara stone and kidnapped children. The film is a prequel to Raiders in the commonly cited chronology. Lucasfilm describes it as a 1930s adventure but does not specify 1935 on its production page; that exact year comes from a secondary chronology FAQ.
2. Raiders of the Lost Ark — 1936
Indy races rival archaeologist René Belloq and Nazi forces to find the Ark of the Covenant. Lucasfilm explicitly places the film in 1936 on its production page.

Which order should you watch the films?
First viewing: release order
- Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
- Temple of Doom (1984)
- The Last Crusade (1989)
- Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
- Dial of Destiny (2023)
Release order gives you the original introduction to Indy, then follows the theatrical series as it moved from 1930s adventures to the 1950s and, finally, 1969. It also avoids the small chronological wrinkle of watching a prequel before the film that introduced the character to movie audiences.

Where the year-by-year dates come from
Lucasfilm’s official pages are the basis for the film descriptions, the broad 1930s-to-1950s shift, the explicit 1936 date for Raiders, and the explicit 1969 date for Dial of Destiny. The 1935, 1938, and 1957 dates are commonly cited chronology entries supported here by a secondary film FAQ; they should not be mistaken for exact years stated on the Lucasfilm pages reviewed.
Watching the five films at home
Lucasfilm’s 2021 announcement describes a four-film 4K Ultra HD collection containing Raiders, Temple of Doom, The Last Crusade, and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, with a collectible booklet, theatrical trailers, digital copies, and bonus material. Dial of Destiny was announced separately for 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD in 2023. The collection is therefore a four-film set, not a five-film set. See the four-film set announcement and the separate home-entertainment announcement for those release details.
