Could Gizmo be responsible for the Gremlins his species can produce—and should anyone destroy him to prevent them? The films’ rules make that an unsettling question, but there is no confirmation that Gremlins 3 will address it. The idea is a speculative way to read the franchise’s central dilemma, not a disclosed plot point.
The rules make Gizmo’s existence an ethical dilemma
In Gremlins (1984), Gizmo is a Mogwai, a creature whose care comes with strict rules: keep Mogwai away from water, do not feed them after midnight, and protect them from light. Water causes Mogwai to multiply; feeding after midnight leads to the transformation associated with gremlins. Those rules turn a cute, seemingly harmless creature into the possible starting point of a dangerous chain of events.
That leaves a question the movies have not directly settled: if Gizmo’s species can produce gremlins, where does responsibility lie? Is Gizmo culpable for what Mogwai can become, or does responsibility belong to the people who know the rules and fail to follow them? A third possibility is that the problem is not one creature at all, but the need to prevent future incidents through care and containment. These are ethical lenses for thinking about the franchise, not known story options for the new film.
Individual responsibility
Blaming Gizmo would treat the danger as an inherent property of his species. But the rules describe conditions that lead to multiplication and transformation; they do not establish that Gizmo intends harm or is responsible for another person’s choices.

Caretaker responsibility
The rules also make the humans who handle Mogwai central to the dilemma. If a caretaker knows what water or a late-night meal can do, a resulting outbreak can be read as a failure of care rather than proof that Gizmo deserves punishment.
Prevention and containment
A third response would focus on preventing the conditions that create gremlins and containing any danger without treating Gizmo himself as guilty. Whether a sequel would explore any of these approaches remains unknown.

What is confirmed about Gremlins 3
Warner Bros. announced in September 2026 that Gremlins 3 is scheduled to open on October 8, 2028, moved from November 19, 2027. The teaser showed Gizmo in a backpack. Chris Columbus is directing, and Steven Spielberg is executive producing. TheWrap reports that Hannah Marks is writing the current draft from a screenplay by Columbus, Zach Lipovsky, and Adam Stein. As of Variety’s September 2026 report, the official title beyond Gremlins 3, plot details, and casting had not been disclosed. The backpack image is not a synopsis, and it does not establish that the film will put Gizmo on trial, threaten to kill him, or resolve the franchise’s responsibility question. (Variety)

Columbus’s earlier comments are not a current plot update
In an August 2025 interview, before the later formal announcement and 2026 schedule news, Columbus described the project as still searching for a story. He said, “There’s a bunch of scripts for Gremlins. I mean, nothing has been approved. We’re working on something, but we’re always [working on something]. Gremlins is a never-ending writing assignment.” He also said he and Spielberg had been “toying around” with ideas for more than 30 years but “just haven’t cracked it yet,” adding that they wanted a reason to make a film and did not want to make one that was not great. Those remarks explain the long development history at that time; they do not mean the now-announced film remains unapproved. (GamesRadar+)

Columbus wrote the original Gremlins, directed by Joe Dante; Dante also directed the 1990 sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, which Columbus did not creatively work on. The first two films establish the rules that make the responsibility question possible, but their existence alone does not tell us what the third film will say about them. (TheWrap; Amblin)

The intriguing possibility is not simply whether Gizmo could be killed off. It is whether a new story might distinguish a creature’s capacity to cause danger from moral responsibility for that danger. Until an official synopsis or further production details say otherwise, that remains an open, speculative question—not a confirmed direction for Gremlins 3.
