Yes—in the ending of IT: Chapter Two, the Losers’ Club kills Pennywise. They strip away the fear that makes It seem invincible, weaken It, then remove and crush Its heart. The qualification is that the film’s ending is a cinematic reworking of Stephen King’s novel, not a reproduction of the book’s more elaborate cosmic finale.
How do the Losers kill Pennywise?
The Losers’ initial attempt to defeat Pennywise through the Ritual of Chüd does not finish the fight. They ultimately turn their belief against It: by refusing to treat It as an all-powerful monster, they make It shrink and become vulnerable. They then remove and crush Its heart, and the film presents this as Pennywise’s death.

The distinction matters: the ritual is part of the confrontation, but it is not the final blow. The Losers’ change in how they see Pennywise enables the physical destruction of Its heart. TIME’s explanation of the ending describes the ritual’s failure and how the group’s belief helps turn Pennywise’s power against It.
Is Pennywise dead at the end of IT: Chapter Two?
Within the film, yes. The Losers destroy Pennywise’s heart, and the story treats It as dead. That is the clearest answer to whether Pennywise dies in IT 2; it does not require assuming that the film has settled every mystery about It or every possibility in the wider franchise.

In 2019, director Andy Muschietti called the two-part adaptation “the end” and “the conclusion of the story,” while also noting that the book and story contain mysteries about Pennywise’s long past. His remarks describe his intent for that two-film story at the time, not a rule about every later story. Muschietti’s Fandango interview provides that context.
How does the film’s ending differ from Stephen King’s novel?
The movie makes the defeat direct and physical: the Losers diminish and humiliate Pennywise, Mike removes Its heart, and the group destroys it. The novel’s ending takes a more elaborate cosmic route, involving a transdimensional confrontation, the Ritual of Chüd and Maturin, the space turtle. Vanity Fair’s comparison of the book and film outlines the contrast.
Screenwriter Gary Dauberman described the movie’s conclusion as “probably the biggest departure” from King’s novel. He said the filmmakers had to distill the book’s metaphysical explanations into elements that could work in a film. SYFY WIRE’s report on Dauberman’s adaptation choices gives his explanation.
