In Infamous Iron Man (2016), Doom sets out to become a hero while his past keeps complicating that effort. The tension makes the series a persuasive redemption story: good intentions matter, but they cannot erase harm or guarantee trust.
What happens when Doctor Doom becomes Iron Man?
Infamous Iron Man, written by Brian Michael Bendis and pencilled by Alex Maleev, begins with an arresting reversal: Victor von Doom takes on the Iron Man identity and attempts to use it for heroic ends. Marvel’s description of the first collected volume frames the premise as a quest to become a hero, shadowed by people seeking revenge for Doom’s past sins.
The reversal also unsettles the familiar moral roles around him. In Marvel’s listing for issue #7, dated April 26, 2017, Doom faces the Maker—a Reed Richards from a dead reality—and the publisher teases the inversion with the question, “Doom is the hero? Richards is the villain? It is a world gone mad!” That is the series’ hook, not a promise that Doom’s history has vanished.
Why this works as a redemption arc
A new identity is only a beginning
Doom can put on Iron Man’s armor and declare a different purpose, but a costume cannot settle whether he has changed. The series’ central dramatic question is whether his conduct can support the heroic role he has claimed. That keeps redemption from becoming a simple matter of rebranding: the past remains relevant because it shapes the consequences of his choices.

The past stays present
Marvel’s description of issue #12, dated September 27, 2017, makes that conflict explicit. It asks how Doom can carry on Iron Man’s legacy while “the legacy of Doctor Doom still haunts him at every turn.” The publisher calls the issue the story’s climax. That framing supports the series’ strongest idea: becoming better is not the same as escaping judgment, and a person’s record can follow them even when their stated aims change.
Redemption is not the same as instant forgiveness
The setup allows Doom’s attempt to be judged by what he does rather than accepted on trust. Others have reasons to doubt him, and the series does not need to make that doubt unreasonable in order to make his effort meaningful. The arc is compelling precisely because heroic action and a history of wrongdoing occupy the same story at once.

Which edition collects the story?
There are two print-collection routes documented by the publishers. The first volume is a way into the series; the complete-run paperback gathers all 12 issues.
