Expats episode 5, “Central,” turns its attention from Margaret, Mercy and Hilary to Essie and Puri, the Filipina domestic workers employed in Margaret’s and Hilary’s homes. Rather than delivering eight verified plot twists, the episode broadens the story: it follows the women’s friendships, family ties and ambitions against a typhoon and Hong Kong’s 2014 political upheaval. Spoilers for the episode’s premise and focus follow; specific outcomes are not confirmed here.

What happens in “Central”?

Prime Video describes the episode as a shift away from the expats’ tangled lives to two Filipina domestic workers and a wider group of Hong Kong residents. A typhoon bears down as the 2014 political movement reaches a turning point. The episode’s defining reveal is therefore a change in whose lives the series puts at the center—not a substantiated sequence of eight plot twists. Prime Video’s episode listing identifies the chapter as “Central.”

Essie, played by Ruby Ruiz, and Puri, played by Amelyn Pardenilla, work in Margaret’s and Hilary’s households. TheWrap reports that Puri visits friends and rehearses for a singing competition. The episode also makes space for the workers’ social lives, correspondence with family abroad and personal dreams, rather than showing them only through their employers’ needs. TheWrap’s interview with creator and showrunner Lulu Wang and Film at Lincoln Center’s episode description and conversation listing describe that broader focus.

What does the episode reveal about Essie and Puri?

Their lives extend beyond the households where they work

Earlier chapters largely frame the story through Margaret (Nicole Kidman), Mercy (Ji-young Yoo) and Hilary (Sarayu Blue). “Central” gives Essie and Puri room as people with friendships, family connections and ambitions of their own. Puri’s rehearsal for a singing competition is one concrete example of a life that does not begin and end with her job.

Independence exists alongside dependence

The women’s plans unfold within practical relationships to the households that employ them. That tension links private domestic life to the episode’s larger setting: the storm and the political turning point affect a city shared by people whose positions and choices are not the same. The available episode descriptions establish this change in emphasis, but not the outcome of Puri’s competition or any particular employment decision or case revelation.

Why is the episode called “Central”?

TIME explains that “Central” refers to Hong Kong’s government complex and business district. The title also suits the episode’s re-centering of the series: people who had occupied the background now become the point of view. Wang told TheWrap, “From a story perspective, it’s that there’s these two doors into this world, and who you empathize with depends on which door you enter through first and who you frame.”

How does the Umbrella Revolution shape the story?

The series places the episode amid Hong Kong’s 2014 Umbrella Revolution. TIME describes the movement as a response to a proposal that would limit electoral candidates to those approved by a government-controlled nominating committee. Protesters sought democratic elections without Beijing’s interference; the movement was not a campaign for independence. TIME’s interview with Wang also explains that the television adaptation moves the story into 2014 to include this political context.

The episode brings that public upheaval into the same frame as household relationships and private aspirations. Wang told TIME, “I wanted to be able to depict that wealth and privilege, but also to contextualize it and make sure that we weren’t celebrating it.” TheWrap also quotes Wang describing a tonal contrast: “The show does deal with some heavy issues, and particularly in five, when we’re in the non-expat perspective, you can assume it’s going to be a heavier watch, but actually there’s so much joy.” These are Wang’s interview comments, not dialogue from the episode.

How does the episode differ from Janice Y. K. Lee’s novel?

Expats adapts Janice Y. K. Lee’s novel The Expatriates, but the series changes the time period and gives Essie and Puri substantial focus. TIME reports that the novel is set in 2010, while Wang’s television story takes place four years later, in 2014, to incorporate the Umbrella Revolution. TIME also notes that the book does not give the domestic workers the same narrative emphasis as the episode.

Comparison Television series Novel
Setting year 2014, according to TIME 2010, according to TIME
Focus on Essie and Puri Episode 5 gives the workers substantial focus, according to TIME and the episode descriptions TIME says the book does not give them the same narrative emphasis

The novel can serve as a companion for readers interested in the adaptation’s choices, but it is not a reliable substitute for episode-specific events.

Why an eight-reveal list would be misleading

The available verified descriptions support the episode’s title, its shift in perspective, the workers’ personal lives, the typhoon and the political setting. They do not establish eight discrete reveals or their order. A matching page that presents an eight-item list conflicts with the official episode description and reliable coverage, so its claims should not be treated as a trustworthy recap. This account sticks to what the episode descriptions and named coverage substantiate rather than inventing twists or outcomes.
