This ranking weighs investigative method, character and performance, influence, and range across eras and formats. It includes police investigators, private detectives and amateur sleuths, because television’s detective tradition depends on all three.
How this ranking works
The order is an editorial judgment, not a claim of universal consensus. ITV’s 2020 announcement for Britain’s Favourite Detective said the UK public-vote special would feature 25 classic characters; that figure describes the planned programme, not its result or a popularity statistic (ITV, 21 July 2020). TVLine and TV Insider have published their own rankings with different scopes, which likewise reflect editorial choices rather than a single settled canon (TVLine; TV Insider, 18 August 2024).
To compare unlike sleuths fairly, the list considers how each gathers evidence, how distinctive the character and performance are, and what the detective contributes to the form. It also makes room for different kinds of mystery: some conceal the culprit, while others reveal the criminal early and make proof the puzzle.
The 12 best TV detectives
1. Lieutenant Columbo
Columbo turns apparent absent-mindedness into an investigative instrument. In the “howcatchem” structure, the audience often sees the crime and its perpetrator before the detective enters the story; suspense comes from watching him patiently expose contradictions and establish proof. Peter Falk’s rumpled, courteous performance makes the method memorable without reducing the character to a gimmick. TVLine discusses Columbo’s place among television’s smartest detectives, and TIME highlights the series’ inverted mystery format (TVLine; TIME).

#1 Best Overall
2. Sherlock Holmes
Holmes is the great television showcase for deduction and observation: details other people overlook become the route to an explanation. The character has appeared in many adaptations, so there is no single definitive television Holmes; the ranking recognizes the enduring detective archetype and the range of performances built around it. TVLine includes Holmes in its own ranking of smart TV detectives (TVLine).
3. Jessica Fletcher
Fletcher combines the outsider’s curiosity with a mystery writer’s familiarity with motives, misdirection and narrative clues. Her warmth and social ease help her notice what people reveal when they do not feel interrogated. TIME points to her writerly observation as part of her appeal (TIME).
4. Hercule Poirot
Poirot’s method is built around close attention to human behavior as much as physical evidence. His fastidiousness and confidence create a vivid contrast with the disorder of the crimes he investigates, while the classic whodunit structure gives his explanations room to bring scattered clues together. TIME includes Poirot among the television detectives it examines (TIME).
Rank #2
- Includes: Series 1 Series 2 Series 3 Series 4 The bride of the peak
5. Adrian Monk
Monk’s exceptional attention to detail makes observation both his strength and a source of friction. The character’s rituals and vulnerabilities complicate the familiar genius-detective template, giving the work of solving a case an emotional dimension as well as a logical one. TIME includes Monk in its historical survey of television detectives (TIME).

Veronica brings the private-investigator tradition into a serialized coming-of-age story. Her sharp questioning and independent streak suit cases rooted in social relationships, where status and reputation can obscure what happened. She broadens the list beyond the established police officer and drawing-room sleuth models; ITV’s 2020 special announcement named her among its featured characters (ITV, 21 July 2020).
7. Joe Friday
Friday represents the procedural investigator: evidence, interviews and professional routine take precedence over eccentric brilliance. That approach gives detective television a sturdy template in which the work of a case, rather than a single dazzling revelation, drives the story. TIME includes Friday in its account of television’s detective tradition (TIME).
Rank #3
- Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Series (2010) Ronald Howard (Actor), Howard Marion (Actor), Various (Director) | Rated: NR | Format: DVD
8. Inspector Morse
Morse stands out as a detective whose intelligence is inseparable from his temperament and tastes. The character gives the crime story a reflective, character-led quality, showing that a detective can be compelling not only for what he deduces but for the complicated person doing the deducing. ITV included Morse among the classic characters in its 2020 special announcement (ITV, 21 July 2020).
9. Miss Marple
Miss Marple’s apparent harmlessness lets her observe people at close range. Her conclusions come from recognizing familiar patterns of behavior, a form of insight that sits comfortably alongside the genre’s more technical investigators. ITV named Marple among the characters planned for its public-vote special (ITV, 21 July 2020).
10. DCI Jane Tennison
Tennison brings a demanding professional perspective to the detective story. Her work places procedure and the pressures of the job at the center, while her character gives the investigation consequences beyond the mystery’s final answer. ITV’s announcement included Tennison among its featured classic detectives (ITV, 21 July 2020).
Rank #4
11. Jonathan Creek
Creek’s expertise in designing stage illusions makes him an unusual partner for conventional police work: he approaches apparently impossible events by examining how an effect could have been produced. The result shifts the mystery from “who did it?” toward “how could it have happened?” ITV included him in the characters announced for its 2020 special (ITV, 21 July 2020).
12. Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch adaptation)
This modernized Holmes merits a separate place from the broader Holmes tradition because the adaptation gives the familiar deductive detective a distinct contemporary interpretation. BBC Studios announced Sherlock: The Complete Seasons 1–3 on DVD and Blu-ray in 2014; that is a historical release announcement, not confirmation of current stock or streaming availability (BBC Studios, 4 September 2014).

The most important distinction is not simply whether a detective is clever. The story’s structure determines what kind of cleverness matters: Holmes and Poirot draw attention to inference and interpretation, while Columbo’s inverted cases ask how a detective can turn suspicion into evidence. Fletcher and Marple make social observation central; Friday represents the procedural tradition; Veronica Mars works through private investigation and serialized relationships.

That variety is why a useful ranking needs more than one measure. A character can be influential without using the most elaborate deductions, and a memorable performance can make a familiar method feel new. The list also spans police, private and amateur investigators rather than treating one job title as the definition of a TV detective.
Columbo on disc
For viewers looking for a physical collection, Universal Pictures At Home lists Columbo: The Complete Series as a 34-disc DVD set containing all 69 episodes and 24 television movies. The distributor’s page documents the set, not its present availability; check the current listing and region compatibility before buying (Universal Pictures At Home, 2012).
